Xbox 360 and XP PC just won't talk to each other....
Discussion
....and it is, as you say, boiling my piss.
Got the 360 connected to a wireless bridge which connects to my Netgear wireless router off which hangs the PC. The 360 can connect to the internet OK but it won't see the PC and the PC (running Windows Media Connect) won't see the Xbox. I've completely turned off my firewall (Zone Alarm) and Windows Firewall is not on. Nothing even shows up on any logs (router or Zone Alarm) to say they've been trying to talk.
Anybody any sensible suggestions before I start hitting it with a hammer?

Can you ping the 360 from the pc? If not, you may have router config problems.
In Windows Media Connect, you have a device section. Is the 360 visible in there? You will need to authorize it to be able to get files. You also need to specify folders for access. I know it mde a mess of this when I installed it.

Nope can't ping the Xbox from any computer on the network but you can ping any other computer from each other etc. (the PC, Mac Mini, 2 laptops). I took this to mean that the 360 is just not pingable?
Strangely enough (I got this tip from another website that was discussing this very problem), I ran Network Setup Wizard on the PC, clicked through the options, rebooted the machine and a 360 now appears in the device list on WMC but they still won't talk, even though I authorised the 360 and set up a folder for it to access.

I assume you have shared the folders individually ie:
f:mydocsmy music
f:mydocsmy pictures
Don't know if you have to do this rather than just share my docs.
Are you trying to access your pc from the media blade on the 360?
You are right about being able to ping the 360, I can't either.
If you go into the media blade and select network settings, test media connection and then click on the more info icon next to the pc selected this will list all the ports needed by Media Connect.

That's the thing though - if I turn off the firewall completely on the PC, surely any port configuration will be irrelevant? The only other place any kind of ports can be set is in the router then, but the required ports are not being blocked, AFAIK. It's possible to set firewall rules to direct incoming or outgoing traffic to certain ports, to an IP on the network but I'm not sure whether I should set the inbound or outbound ports? I also don't think it would make any difference but I could be wrong....
Update.
While searching last night I came across a media server called TVersity (www.tversity.com) which someone said will work with Xbox 360. I installed it and, lo and behold, it appeared in the 360 media page, connected to it and I could play music. Cool.
A side effect of this was that WMC now also appeared in the list of devices in the 360's media page however despite being able to connect to WMC, the 360 would just sit there scanning and then eventually, after quite sometime, despite there being only one folder with one album shared, it would return with the very unhelpful "There are no media files". Not so cool.
So, I could use TVersity but it's still in its infancy and won't let me share out a networked drive (all my music is on an external drive which is connected to my Mac Mini, the PC accesses it over the network).
It gets even wierder. The bridge I use to get the 360 on the wireless network is actually my Squeezebox (I used to do the same with my old Xbox). Out of curiosity because the latest version of the Squeezebox server includes support for UPNP media servers, I had a look to see if the WMC server appeared on the Squeezebox. It did and I could connect to it and play music! I could also connect to the TVersity server in the same way.
So;
360->WMC(XP) = Not working (though can now see each other)
360->Tversity(XP) = Working
Squeezebox->WMC(XP) = Working
Squeezebox->TVersity(XP) = Working
The last thing that happened last night was I thought it might be a good idea to shut down both the WMC and TVersity servers and restart UPNP (using services.msc). However, Windows failed to restart UPNP and now I can't restart WMC because it says "Folder sharing is busy". Probably solve it with a reboot but I thought it might be of some relevance. Or it might have been incredibly stupid of me...

Don't know exactly how you've got things set up but IIRC some netgears have a setting called 'wireless isolation' or something similar, which means that wireless devices can't talk to each other only to the router. It's not that is it?
Interesting. Should that be set to isolate or not then?
It's my understanding though that none of my network devices talk directly to each other - they all go via the router, surely?

'not isolate' I think in your case.As an avid techno/gadget freak I read this thread.............and I have to admit that I now have come to the conclusion that I am kidding myself on..I know nothing - I have no Idea what that was all about!...but wish I did cause my Xbox 360 is my next addition to my cinema room.
What ever it was you were trying to do ..good luck hope it works
