If it's a drive failure then you can fix it.
If it's a battery issues then you can fix it.
If it's anything else then Apple can fix it

If it's under warranty ignore the above, Apple can fix it
If it's not under warranty then we'll need more info to double check.

Warranty schmarranty - sale of goods act. So wherever you bought it from, remind them of that little bit of legislation before they ask £££ to fix it.

Ok. What's up with it?

What happens when you turn it on, try to wipe it, try to plug it in to a computer?

colin - by any chance did you drop it, even 6" whilst playing?
As I said above, you don't need to worry about warranty as you have the Sale Of Goods Act to make use of.
Google the phrase and read.

If you're using the latest version of iTunes, then as soon as you plug in the iPod, you'll see it pop up on the left hand panel and when you select it, the options are there to restore and update (which if already up-to-date, will be greyed out.)
If the iPod is not showing in iTunes or the list of connected devices in Explorer, then it sounds like there's a HDD problem - hence asking about it being dropped, which you're not covered for by SOGA.

Hi I eventualy contacted Apple (yesterday)they told me £166 to repair or replace it I then quoted sale of goods act 6 years etc after being put through to another dept and being on the phone a long time they are sending me a box to return my ipod and said they will replace it with a new one for nothing. As PJ S said google SOG ACT it worked for me so thanks very much

Get nonworking Ipod, turn on side, tap firmly and sharply against side of desk.

Enjoy now working ipod.

Had the same symptoms as you, cured them as above.

Bad luck, you should have gone to an Apple store, set fire to it and then went and bought one of those great brown Microsoft things instead.

iPods are all shite, listen to everyone on the internet.

The hard drive in one of mine failed too. It was one of the very first 5 GB first-gen iPods with the spinny wheel in the UK, with firewire connection on the top, etc. I supposed that it had lasted quite a long time to bother Apple about it, so instead vented my rage at Apple by emailing every tech fund manager I know to dump their stock. Evil, evil Apple.
