Sorry if this is the wrong area of the forum.

The problem is our Toshiba 42" LCD TVs (42WLT66) display has developed what I now understand to be a common fault. A black line down the center of the screen.

It's under 1 year old so I called Toshiba to get it repaired under their manufacturers warranty.

The problem is it's been away with Toshiba's 3rd party repairer for over 8 weeks - and in the meantime we've had a 22" 15 year old (duff as anything has funny colours etc) loan TV.

I've called up today to find out what's going on and it's still waiting on a parts.
Now from digging around on the avforums it appears this is a common fault and it will re-occur.

Is there anything I can do to - either get it replaced - or get a decent loan box - it's not been an issue but I'm getting really annoyed by a) how long it's taking and b) having to put up with their naff replacement TV.

Bearing in mind that this problem is likely to reoccur can I claim anything under the sales of goods act? Unfit for purpose of something like that?

Goods not fit for purpose or not of merchantable quality perhaps?

Hi,

Now I'm just ranting after I've spent pretty much the whole day on the phone/waiting for callbacks (that never came) from the place I bought it and from and the manufacturer.

The place I bought it from (high street outlet won't name due to naming and shaming policy) couldn't give a flying censored about any claim I have under the Sales of Goods Act. I've tried calling every number I could find even had the dubious 'pleasure' of speaking to the manager of the store....if only he was as useful as he was obstructive/stupid! GRRR!

At about 8pm I'd given up for the day - after promises of call backs that never came - being told I had to put everything in writing etc, etc, etc.

I've found the chairman's office number - going to call it in the AM - doubt I'll get very far but I'm going to be a royal pain in the censored

Considering just charging it back then letting a court decide if a black line down the middle of the screen on a 9 month old TV, being 'repaired' fov over 8 weeks!

To top it all I found out today that this fault normally re-occurs (in about 3-6 months) and that the repair would only guaranteed for 3 months!

Fuming?! I should say so!

RAH!

Anyone want to buy a TV ;-)

Agreed. The credit card chargeback is the best plan.

Years ago when I worked at PC World part time one of the selling points of their extended warranty was that if the unit could not be repaired within six weeks it would be replaced. Now, I know this is a slightly different issue, but I did find out that the reason that 'selling point' was included was that 6 weeks was the maximum amount of time deemed reasonable for a repair. I don't know whether this is in statute, or from previous cases so in case law, but two months on a 9 month old TV is unacceptable. If you can get the money back through your card company they wont bother suing you...

Had one last go at calling the 'vendor' and Toshiba - Toshiba have come through - they have offered a credit on the TV so I can goto the store and have a brand new one!

THe persistence pays off! Toshiba - credit where it's due have done their upmost to sort it out. THe highstreet store - have been AWFUL and the repairer a total joke!

Thank heaven for sensible managers!
