how to reinstall audio driver

I'm having a problem with the family computer. The speakers are hooked up but we can't get any sound. In sound properties it says "no audio device" and I looked in device manager and there is no sound card listed. It has a sound card installed, they think they deleted the driver? If I put in the system cd can I reinstall the driver for the sound card without reinstalling the whole system? It's XP.
