Bought a couple of Logitech Webcams, one for us and one for the old dear for Xmas - idea is she can see more of the grandkids as we live a long way away. All we want to do is talk to/see each other. Is there any decent software we should be using - do we have to use MSN or something - have heard about skype, but think these might be overkill? Hoping the webcams will come with some basic software. Both on broadband so speed shouldnt be an issue

Webcams are both Logitech Quickcam Communicate STX Plus if that makes a difference

Thanks for any help and apologies for my gross incompetance

MSN ought to be quite sufficient. Install the webcams, then go to Live.com, get messenger and install it. sign up from each PC with a different account, then each add the other as a friend. job done.
Happy webcamming

Skype is not overkill. Very simple to use.

I use Skype to talk to my brother in Oz, Its easy to use and its always very stable. I used to use MSN but i found it pretty poor, It has probably improved by now though.

live.com implies messenger might not work with XP Professional?? Surely not?

Skype is far better than MSN for calls on webcam, I use mine regularly to call friends in Canada. MSN audio quality is pretty poor when making a call, skypes is problem free IMO

Another + for Skype.
Work for a small company where all the staff are connected by Skype, all over the world. You do get the occasional few second drop out which irritates somewhat, but overall it's a great piece of intuitive software, even if it is starting to get far more features than when I first started using it.
Also very handy to keep in touch with the myriad of friends who have emigrated from this wonderful (scratchchin ) county of ours
