Currently have Compaq Presario V5245eu, standard drive is 4200 spin, how much difference would a 54000 or 7200 drive make?
Size not particularly important only needs OS and basic apps.
I have a 40gb 5400 external 2.5 drive already which i could fit but is it worth going 7200?
Or would more RAM be better? Standard is 2x 512mb so upgrade would be expensive as 2x 1gb would be required.

A 54000 rpm drive would whistle a bit and may suffer from the gyroscopic effect.

Unless you're struggling with disk space, the first upgrade should IMO *always* be RAM. Memory makes MUCH more difference if you're short...

Fill the laptop with RAM (up to the max the laptop and/or the OS will take, no laptop I know can take more than 4 GB of RAM, and old versions of Windows can only use 2 of that) - then think about drive speed.

Go for the ram option, btw NT 3 upwards can address 4GB of ram, its some chipsets that only allow it access to 3.5GB and 32bit processes can only be allocated 2GB of that ram. smile

Max RAM is 2gb, to upgrade would need 2x 1gb modules.
Cost around £140 so not really financially worth it.
Hard disk only needs to be around 40gb so would be quite cheap upgrade.
