t up!Thanks austin, tried that already. The problem is that the power button doesn't even work - the thing won't power up.
basically, it woke from sleep and the keyboard and trackpad were not working. This problem has happened to me before, i normally just restart and its fine. couldn't restart as the power button wasn't working. I pulled out my USB drive - message flashed up on the screen (so it works ok when it's on!), I then unplugged the power g and removed battery. laptop powers down. put battery back in, laptop doesn't power up.
I've tried all the appropriate resets etc. still knackered.
as for what my thesis is on - i can't remember the exact title but its about chemistry and stuff.

Easy one this is. Just buy a 2.5" USB hard-drive caddy (you'll have to check if drive is SATA or IDE interface, but if you don't know the difference your local computer shop will). Put drive in, plug into PC, and you should then be able to browse the drive and extract any data you need.
If you're not very computer-savvy your local computer shop should be able to do this.
