Hi

My sister has just bought a Three USB modem to get herself online. The installer won't work because it needs SP1 or higher to be installed, but she can't get SP1 installed because she's not online...

Now I don't believe for a second you actually need sp1 to get this thing installed, but is there anyway to trick windows into thinking SP1 is installed?

Cheers,
Matt

Have never tried it, but I would find the version number currently on there (Start... Run... type in WINVER) and then search the registry for that exact number (e.g. 5.1.2600). Then try changing it to a newer number (5.1.2600.5512 is SP3). Might work.

Unless XP SP1 adds some extra functionality to XP that is required by the 3 Modem..which means that it won't work even if you do trick the installer to think XP1 is installed.

Matt,

If she's really desperate - and you've got no solution - then I've got SP2 on CD which you/she could pop over and pick up (near Ascot) ... not a million miles away.

On a totally unrelated side-note ....

I've just setup a new Windows XP Pro machine and installed SP3. Since then the the Windows installer won't install any new updates. Pretty flippin annoying - but fortunately Google was my friend - the gem was hidden away on a page. I've not tested this yet - but looking at the feedback it works.

Windows XP Service Pack 3 installs a new version of Windows Update, but it forgets to register it. The fix is as follows:

Log on as an administrator, and run cmd.exe, and issue the following commands:
> net stop wuauserv
> cd\windows\system32
> regsvr32 wups2.dll
> net start wuauserv
Then try again.

P.S - Mega MEGA thanks to Ziggy over on Kioskea for this.

Get you/relative/neighbour to download that, stick on a flash drive and Robert is your mother's brother.

Watch out for SP3. Installed it and had no end of problems starting windows (up to 20mins!) before it totally crashed and I had to re-install windows completely, without SP3 this time!

XP SP1 added support for USB 2.0 which upped the maximum USB speed from 1.5Mbit to 480Mbit .. so (assuming the modem even works in USB 1.0 mode) you may not get full speed broadband as the maximum it will pass will be about 1Mbit...

oops, wrong forum!

OK, she was desperate to get online but doesn't live anywhere near me. Anyway, she's taken her laptop to her friends house and is now downloading a million updates.

Cheers for the help anyway guys, much appreciated!

Official MS fix document is here and, yes it does work even for a non-techie like me. Your version isn't quite the same as MS's however.
Has been covered in this forum as well but difficult to decide on what search criteria to use.

Thanks Doggie thumbup

I did try the steps I posted last night and it worked a treat. I'd not come across this issue at all until yesterday evening.
