Are there any restrictions on the use of the .biz, .net and .eu domain extensions?

Which is the prefered one of the three given that the .com and .co.uk are currently taken by private individuals with more foresight than me (neither .com nor .co.uk are trading sites, they just have their names up).

As the product I am selling is entirely web based is it best to go for .net, or EU as we plan to sell EU wide within a year or so?

Best thing is to go for a good close .com, buy up the other versions if it's a trade name, .net, .org etc. and redirect these to the close .com

no restrictions to speak of.

Just register as many as you can with as many different misspellings and alternate spellings as you can (to stop others trying to blackmail you with them later!)

Check my profile for more details!

Eh? - no blackmail for a registered trademark. No need to buy up loads of similar names because a seller of domain names tells you to.

We have the trademark but some woman from Norfolk with a bizare firsr name has bought the.co.uk. Some niche photography company have the .com but again are not using it and just have their logo on it.

smile Bless.. a trademark is worth nothing if you're not prepared to spend to protect it!

Save yourself the hassle (and £x000 of costs) and just pre-reg them..

I make like 1-2p on the domains.. so I couldn't give a fig if someone buys extra of them or not, It just makes no sense at all not to buy them.

You're free to ignore my advice as you obviously know better!

new a guy who went on the dragons den for his meat jerky, some kind chap on the team apparently went onto the net and bought the domain names, guy was a bit pissed with him, but seems to have gotten the name sorted

ended up getting a .net address as the .co.uk was taken and did not want the .com as you can't hide the personal address details with them

You can hide your details on all domains, .com .net .org .uk etc
The can't hide your details if you're a business on .uk domains.

Jamie How can it be done with a .com I failed to work it out and when I raised a support ticket the reponse was "You cannot hide the information with a .com address, only .co.uk." that was going back to 2007, have things changed?

Hi Steve,

We now offer free WHOIS Privacy on all domains, this used to be a 'premium paid for' service, but we've now made it free..
Just raise a support ticket and request any/all domains be made private.

Hi Jamie,

I know of a couple of trading companys who have .co.uk addresses, but have their details withheld (listed as non-trading individuals)

Are they commiting any kind of offence by doing this?

And what are the penalties?

(One is a friend of a work colleague who I would like to advise to get their house in order, the other is someone I would quite happily shaft, as they once tried to do to me many moons ago....)

know a guy who has a .com address, he told me that he tried to get it changed

"I have spoken to my ISP.
As the website is a .com site and not a .co.uk, .biz or .net it comes under US jurisdiction. US laws states that a name and address MUST BE SHOWN!
Nothing more can be done. "

he is a tad upset at this

Not an offence, but it is against Nominets T&C's and they will make them change it back, or revoke the domain, so just report them to nominet if you're concerned.
