You don't have to, they will allow you to keep it, I have just asked.

I have been with them for 10 years, never had a single problem - until the Car Phone wehouse took them over.
They now restrict P2P/Torrent downloads at peak times, apparently all ISPs will be going the same way.

If I leave AOL it will only be for those reasons.

Their website must have the slowest responses in the universe. I have 2mb and I'm sure that most pages out on the web loaded faster when had dial-up. I by-pass it by using Mozilla and OE via Imap.

Trying to navigate the Billing pages is like going round Hampton Court maze - in the dark.

As a sideline I fix peoples PC's , do upgrades, virus removal , wireless networking etc. Just the odd evening or weekend for beer money. Now I know what I am doing but have got to the point where the first thing I check when I get a call is 'Do you have AOL'. If the answer is yes then I wont take the job, even if its somethign stupid like a broken keyboard.

Truly the worst customer service ever, and a technical nightmare when it goes tits up.

Almost exactly the same as you, except it has now turned it my main job.
I too won't touch AOL machines.
Quite apart from the software being bloody awful, aol users seem to have a certain "mindset", which is difficult to fathom.
The campaign to have aol disconnected from the rest of the internet appeals to me.

Yep! I've wasted hours and hours trying to persuade AOL 9 VR (Vista Ready rolleyes) that this machine i'm working on has a modem. ALO 9 used the modem. Upgrade to VR (Vista Ready rolleyes) and no modem can be found.

I aggree about AOL users. They all seem to assume that you really do need to jump through all the AOL hoops just to get on the Internet.

friends had aol dial up, 2 pc's and wanted to upgrade to broadband and use both pc's online via the one router

only option was to get 2 accounts, ie one per PC as you could not share the account, took a long time to get the account cancelled, they insisted on speaking to m8's husband who has bad MS

think they use zen now smile

I am ex AOL user also.. Internet with training wheels on! Yurgh! Not so long ago however, I helped a friend of mine set up his Mac & PC network to share AOL broadband, WITHOUT their sodding software. It's actually a much better experience once you work out how to ditch the cruddy software (AOL use weird MTU settings which caused some head scratching for a while though).

not keen on aol and have to admit was trying to get them to change to something better, aol tech support actually helped me sell them the idea and they are both as happy as you can be on the new isp, seems faster for some reason as well smile

It's a Packard Bell machine I'm working on now. Well just about to give up with.
AOL 9VR won't locate the modem. Any thoughts.

The machine's owner can't get broadband so is stuck with dial up. I was about to recommend they drop AOL in favour of something like Plus net.

Years ago when I had dial up I had a 3 com modem that did that, the settings had to be put in manually, AOL talked me through it. Mind you that was pre-India call centre days, they are rubbish, the Irish support team are still ace.

I am sure an awful lot of issues that AOL get blamed for are actually nothing to do with AOL.
Another lot of AOL bashing seems to come from people who haven't used them for years. A bit like someone having owned a Skoda 20 years ago and still sgging them off today.
