Does anyone know what program would be best suited to create Manhole shafts in 3D, but importantly having the function of creating its own sections from the finished 3D model?

Would the 3D functions within AutoCAD (or even TriForma) be capable of this?

Cheers
Lee

solid works.

draw up in 3D, then create drawings of any view you like. elevation, orthographic etc.

need anything doing i am bored at the minute smile

ETA - sections easily done in solidworks. you basically tell the pc what you want to look at with 'create view' [i.e. you draw a line and tell it you want a section view on that line] then drag the views where you want them on the paperspace and dimension.

Edited again to fully answer. No, 3D autocad functions won't work. with programs like autocad you are basically creating a drawing so each new view requires a new drawing. with true 3D programs such as those described you create the item in 3D and then take as many views from that as you need for the drawing.

As I say, if its a one off I could do it on the sly for you.

That would be my first thought.

IIRC there is a pretty nice program from Google that might be of some use here..

Thanks for the replies...

In regards to all these programs is it possible to convert the finished model into .dwg/.dgn format to add text and to place into title blocks etc?

Are they all standalone programs? or bolt ons to different operating system?

yeah all standalone. it will be formatted to the progam. [i.e. solidworks drawing is .sldrw] but you can export as dwg/dgn if you need to email it. you would dimension and annotate it using the 3D program.

no massive difference between them really. if its commercial then just get the reps in and see which interface you prefer and how much a licence is going to set you back. not going to be worth it for odd jobs.

Whenever I need 3D drawing in AutoCAD I create them using solids and then use the viewports to give the different views, no need to redraw each time.
