I bought Michael Clayton on DVD recently from HMV. Upon trying to play it in my DVD player it refused to do anything other than show a blank screen. I have around 500 discs and this is the first time this has happened. As it turned out this is one of those new Copy Protected DVD's. If you look carefully on the back of the box, hidden down the bottom near the bar code is this little tell tale logo...

As my player is a pretty decent model (Primare) I have no intention of swapping it for something new, just to play one disc!

I just returned from HMV today as well. Two DVD's I wanted to buy both had this logo on the back, so I didn't bother buying them. So HMV and the movie industry will be loosing sales from now on

Primare might sound like cheap branding, but if I am not mistaken it's hi end stuff?

Not really, its a mechanism that doesnt conform to the DVD standard on which many players were built, therefore the player isnt st, the mechanism is.

Its also largely pointless in terms of what its supposed to combat so the easiest thing for everyone would be to ditch it.

As I said, it's a Primare (with awesome build, sound and picture). I'm not about to spend another grand to play a £7 DVD. I am not really into the disposable culture of buying cheap tat from Currys every five minutes, with multiple features instead of quality.

ps

That Copy Protected DVD disc does work on my spare cheapo Marantz player. But that has a crappy picture by comparison, hence I don't use it.

thanks for the tip, got dvd players in the pc and one for the tv, the previous poster is correct, by changing the format, they are no longer DVD format, but some special format to be avoided like securerom on pc

I did return it actually. They swapped it for another one. It was only after I realized the second also failed that I investigated the disc further. It was then I noticed this new tiny logo hidden on the back at the bottom. So two wasted trips and I learned from the experience. Now I look at the back of DVD cases every time before I buy - or not!

There are also Copy Protected CD's available too. Apparently they cannot legally be called Compact Disc's and hence are not even allowed to have the official CD logo on their cases. They also cause havoc with some kit.

When did this Primare brand pop up?

Thought I was pretty well up to date, but I've never heard of it.

You can imagine the meeting where they came up with this, lots of enthusiastic handshakes and hearty back-slapping about how brilliant they are and how much they're going to stick one to the pirating industry with this.

Then they end up losing out because it actually becomes more effort to buy and play a legitimate DVD than it is to download it or buy a pirate copy.

I'm not really sure how they even decided it was a good idea - the only people it's going to hinder are people who are making copies themselves from retail DVDs. Most "dahn the market" pirate copies come from factory master discs, or are filmed manually in cinemas. Or indeed are downloaded from the same sources you could use yourself.

Plus as stated before, pirate copies don't have the adverts...
