I have been told that due to where i live, it is impossible to have a better internet speed than i do due to distance from the exchange. We are with BT at the moment.

Would a change to virgin be any different?

Also, when i worked at the hospital, which is about a 2 minute walk from my house and even further from the exchange, their internet speed was around 20m. How is this?

Is there any thing i can do, not bothered about the price, to get higher than the 750k i do at the moment?

any provider actually present in your exchange (check samknows.com) probably can offer a better speed. Other providers typically provide the service over ADSL2+ which tends to give better speeds over virtually all distances.

Any ADSL service will be the same as it will obviously use the same line. Cable may be faster, but you would only know once you had it installed and paid for I think.

If the exchange is LLC - enabled the OP may be able to get BeThere's or O2's 24Mb service. Otherwise check for Virgin cable in the area.

Virgin will not be limited by distance (unless you use their ADSL service) so you should get whatever package you sign up for. (Provided it is available in the area.) BT said max speed to my line is 5meg but with 02 I am getting 14meg.

BE's 24Mb service will be quicker. Ok you wont get anywhere near 24Mb but you will get proportionally more than BT offer. I had a fault on my line so my BT provided broadband dropped to about 3meg. BE using the same line with the same fault still in play gives me 11Meg.

Hospital will be on the backbone. I live 10 mins walk from work and at home I get around 500KB (4Mb) and at work it's around 4MB (that's over 30Mb!)

You don't say how far you are from the exchange so it's impossible to say. If you're only getting 750Kb and you're more than, say, 3 miles from the exchange, then going with an unbundled supplier won't help you. They might offer 24Mb but it's unlikely you'll see any more of it than on an 8Mb service)

In other words it's doubtful you'll be able to get more.

Lol, on the backbone? I beg to differ.

This is probably a stupid question and this is half-remembered, but back in the days of dial-up you could ask BT to turn up the, for want of a better word, 'volume' or gain I think it was on your line to enable a better speed on your line.

Would this make any difference to the effective distance you are from the local exchange, making faster speeds possible?

Look at the comparison tables for your area on speedtest.net

When i was with BT (and Zen) the best I ever got was 512K due to a long line. Switched to Be who are LLU on my exchange and now get 800/900K usually and has been as much as 1400K!

attenuation and signal-to-noise make a slight difference. nothing major to write home about though. nor can either be "turned up/down".

How's it connected then?

Most likely a leased line to a tier2 or 3 ISP.

You would think with technology as it is, within a few years we will all be able to get 20+ meg no matter where we are.

Define not bothered about price. You could get a 100mb or even a 1GB leased line but it will cost you mega money if you are not in a major city. If you are in a major city it will cost a lot except if you are in London where you can get 100mb for about £9K a year.

Just phone up and say your going to leave and go to virgin cos they can offer 'X' amount of DL speeds for 'X' amount of pounds a month.

In my experience they will either reduce what you pay or match the speed mentioned.

That is unless you live near the north/south pole. Then the trip wouldnt be worth it really

Not without major upgrades to all the POPs. (which would cost $$$s)
