iTunes, and two computers.

As quite a new iPod user(3g iphone) I am still getting to grips with some of the features.

Anyway I have been quite happy using iTunes on my desktop PC. Now I wish to have it on my laptop as well.

I have downloaded iTunes to it, and all is well, except I cant seem to transfer the whole libary from my iPhone. It only wants to transfer the purchased items, not the ones I manually loaded from CDs.

How can I transfer the whole libary from my iPhone to my laptop??

You can't!

Itunes will not let you copy music from the iphone/ ipod to a PC, you have to use a 3rd party program to do it. I use one called Tune Aid.

This is just one of many reasons why Itunes sucks.

If only iTunes had some simple choices:

Put everything from the iPod onto the PC
Put everything from the PC onto the iPod

you can "transfer purchases" ie anything you bought via itunes. however anything that wasnt bought on itunes cant be copied (i know it sucks)

I've never understood why anyone want to own an ipod, let alone buy music from iTunes.

What's wrong with an mp3 player and DRM free mp3's?

It doesn't have to be an iPod/Phone it can be anything with enough space to hold all of your music.
I've used that method to move my music from old desktop to new one to laptop without any problems.

Basically copy music folder from old computer to something with lots of storage space. Connect said device to new laptop and copy music folder over. Install iTunes and it should impost everything on its own.

There are a bunch of programs to copy from ipod to PC. Never used any so can't recommend one, but either someone will be along soon or pop over to google.

It's a fooking silly policy by Apple but keeps the iTunes record companies happy...

I've edited my post to include the way I did it the second time, as long as all your iTunes music is in the same folder it only takes about 2 minutes and the time taken to copy music from computer to storage device and on to laptop - about 15 mins for 16gb for me.

I browsed the ipod via my computer, showed hidden files, copied 'em to hard disk.

Why not just copy the contents of your my documents\my music\...\itunes\ folder from desktop to laptop? Then point itunes on the laptop at that folder and add to the library.

That's the simple version of what the Apple support website says. I don't see the need for using 3rd party software.

That's fine if you have space on the Ipod, but if I've understood correctly, if the Ipod is over half-full it's not going to work?

Just use a usb drive or something. Or network the two computers using either a hub or a crossover cable.

I have all my music on my media PC and a wireless network to my laptop. If you share the music folder on the host and map that folder as a network drive on the laptop, you can then tell itunes to use the network drive for the library and avoid having two copies of everything.

I reckon it's that people buy iPods becuase they don't understand the alternatives, like iSheep.

Although, i must say, the iPod touch is amazing, it's just a pity it's an iPod.
