keyboard giving numbers instead of letters help please

Hi
Can anyone help please. My O/H is having trouble with his keyboard on his laptop. When he presses a letter, a number comes up. Any computer boffs have any ideas on this please. Greatly appreciated.

There'll be a locked 'Fn' (function) key on the board that has been activated.
Usually it'll be a shade of purple or similar on the top right of one of the other keys
