chaps and chapettes,
i need new fairly cheap broadband that i can transfer over from my rented house to one i buy if i buy again later in the year.
we've just gone for std BT line with free calls and want to tack on broadband. maybe we'll change to something different once we're settled in new house but FOR NOW I AM ONLY INTERESTED IN BORADBAND ONLY PACKAGES:

right phone line sorted and no one can offer us decent speed.
BUT Virgin say they CAN? am i being fibbed to or can different providers offer a different speed? everyone else says we're far from the exchange blah blah 0.5mbps but virgin reckon almost 4mbps. something to do with 'digital exchange' blah blah...????
i've been offered a cheap price and so i could be tempted because they struggle to be more average than tiscali at my old place...!

Well I thought virgin offered optical BB. If you had opitical in your area, go for that.
Do a line test on the BT webpage - it should give you an estimate

All to do with how broadband gets to you're house .
BT use copper from exchange to you're house ,in my case fastest I could get was about 2-3 Mb.So with any provider that's about top speed for me .
Now Virgin use a different approach ( so my friendly Virgin installer told me )
They carry it on fibre to central points ,then copper (or rather coax) to distribution cabinets ( little green boxes in street), and into you're home in coax .
As speed goes up so does bandwidth needed ,and yer actual copper pair is not noted for a great bandwidth whereas fibre has no problems and coax a lot less than a copper pair (not origonally designed for data -full of joints etc ).
To put it into perspective - even if Virgin had to get broadband from their fibre end to my house on the equivalent to a BT line -the distance would be at least a quarter of that from the BT exchange -so I would expect a good deal increase from BT's offering of 2-3 MB ,and added to that is the fact that on the short hop to my house ,it's on transmission friendly coax ,without any nasty crimped /unscreened unscreened pair cables .

Virgin also do an ADSL service for areas that are not cabled. If they are offering a higher rate than other providers, it may be that they have installed kit in the local exchange (this is called "local loop unbundling" or LLU).
As of December last year, there is a voluntary code of conduct in place for all ISP's which means that they have to tell you what speeds you can realistically expect at your location, rather than the theroetical maximum that the exchange can support.

used to be with Eclipse, it was an upto 8 mb service, shortly before I got a MAC, it was 50 kbps, which apparently was within the specification
the "upto" is the key
