Urgent computer help sought please?

Hey! Not got long because I'm borrowing someone elses laptop.

Anyway, living in halls of residence at uni with something like 10mbps broadband, but all of a sudden, mine has suddenly decided to stop receiving the internet over the network and I can't work out why.

I have quite a broad knowledge of networks and pcs so have been trying all the settings in vista. It just says that I'm connected to the network with no internet. Now I'm currently using another laptop on the same network port in my room and obviously it's fine.

Any suggestions?

Oh and it's a waste of time putting this in the computer forum because nobody's ever in there - sorry!

can the IP address of the computer be changed and see if that works?

Try ipconfig /renew?

You should see the Google homepage come up.

Can you ping anything?

reinstall network drivers, uninstall any firewalls etc and try again.

disable & renable the network connection. it worked on my mates lappy the other day.

It's probably the DHCP bug in Vista. try this http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928233 or give it a static IP.

Thanks for the replies! I can get Google on that page and I can't get a response from the server if I try to ping it. However, I can't fathom this out because after several restarts this morning, it's decided to work again...

I'm sure it will stop again though... that's why I can't figure this out...

Sounds like a DNS error, I'm sure somebody will be along to give you a solution soon.

I'm sure there is a way you can set your secondary DNS server to something that is independent of the one you are provided by your university.

Could it be you are trying to login to the server by IP address and not DNS name and so if they update the server you then cant log in?

Happened several times at work and is bloody annoying to find servers referring to other servers by IP, we upgrade a server and the whole system goes down.

Could well be. I'm not sure if you can set your IP manually where you are, but I've had the same issue where internet names will only resolve via IP address. So in my router I've set my 2nd DNS server to 208.67.222.222 which is an Open DNS server address.

So if you can, set your IP manually (make sure it matches the one that you currently have). You can find this out by:
Run Type cmd, you will see a DOS prompt, enter ipconfig/all and hit return. You will see all your IP address etc.

I'm not sure how your network at uni works, but if you are assigned an IP and it never changes then setting it manually should work.

Once you have set it manually set your secondary DNS server as 208.67.222.222 and should the one that you currently use fall over again, the second one should be able to resolve the name issues you seem to be having.

Have diddled with the ipconfig and it's working again!
