I'm looking for a way to do this with a video I've taken of a friends band which is currently in DVD format and I want to get into a compressed PC format like mpeg.

I'm ideally looking for a way to do this using freeware software.

All you need to know at http://www.videohelp.com/ - list of tools, user guides etc.

For ease I use DVD-Fab as it'll also reformat to iPod if wanted.

DVD Extractor followed by Handbrake will do the trick

AnyDVD (or equivalent) + Handbrake.

Handbrake won't do it on its own if the DVD is "protected".

Funnily enough - I'm trying to do the exact opposite...

Annoyingly true. It used to do everything for you but they removed it from the newer versions for some reason
