I have had a new Nano (4th gen) and it won't charge apart from when it attached to the computer. In the docking station it plays ok, but tells me 'Charging is not supported' then dies after a couple of hours. The same attached to the car stereo with an ipod lead, but it even doesn't work with a normal car charge lead, of which I have tried two. All of them worked fine with a 2nd generation Nano.

Is this normal with the current models, or is mine not working properly?

I don't really see it as progress if you need to carry a laptop around to keep your portable music player topped up.

Apple recently, (well since my ipod touch was bought), fettled with the powering configuration on the newer models. As such i too get the charging not supported issue. The only way to sort it is to either buy a connector that fits to whatever cord, or speaker you are using which converts the pins, or to buy new speakers, etc. It is one of the most ridiculous things apple have done, to be honest, and I fail to grasp why exactly they did it. Either way, I now have 2 sound-docks, one charges, and the other does not. So, your ipod is fine, and doing exactly what it is meant to, the things you are plugging it into, however, are just configured for the previous models.

Bugger. I suspected as much.

I could cope with a few quid on a new dock, but I'm not changing the stereo in the car! That is where it is really annoying.

Does the converter mean the head unit will still control the ipod? At the moment when I turn the car off the ipod stays on and runs out unless you unplug it and turn it off seperately.

What a pain in the arse. It pretty much worked perfectly before.

As far as I'm aware the converter will just allow it to power the ipod. I would imagine everything else would stay the same control wise.

Thanks Andy.

Quick google and I think one of these will do:

I've worked out why Apple have done it - £20 or none of your old stuff works. Makes up for the new model being slightly cheaper than the 3rd gen.

As I recall, the change was due to original iPods being Firewire devices, with later ones switching to USB2.

Apple documented this at the time, to ensure all manufacturers were making devices to the new specification - unfortunately, because both charging pins were implemented for a while, to ensure backwards compatibility, manufacturers never bothered to change their cables / docks etc. leaving people with kit which doesn't charge in older docks etc.

I got one of the jobbies pictured above. £20 just about from an Apple shop.

Partial success as I can now charge the Nano from a normal car charger - but attached to the car stereo all I get is an error message on the display and it still doesn't charge. All seemes to work as normal on the stereo, just with no track information? Bit odd as it just makes it worse.

My advice would be to not get a new iPod.
