It sits there, lurking, at the top of my keyboard, yet I have not once ever seen it used for anything. Can anyone enlighten me?

It can be fixed. Get a MAC - it seems to be one of the many useful and non-useful keys that are missing.

Alt + L ... I just held down alt and hit every key to see, some of the symbols are even more weird that this one.
