There's also the "something down the headphone socket" issue. Try cleaning that out as well.

If the edge along the top is longer than the edge at the side, you're holding your iPhone horizontally.

Rotate it by 90 degrees.

If the big pushy button thing is at the top, rotate it by a further 180 degrees.

If all you can see is a big silver apple, turn the phone around until you see a big piece of glass, and review the above instructions.

When you are finally are holding the phone correctly, the mute switch is a silver rocker switch on the top left-hand side.

If a red dot is showing, then the iPhone's safety catch is off, and you might just shoot yourself in the foot. You twunt.
