ok i've been saving for a cl500 (01 plate) for a little while now, but i'm starting to get seriously tempted by the e55 amg (1999/2000 era) am i nuts! the cl is a better looking car in my opinion and offers serious comfort and luxury, but i've look at a few and there is a lot of average cars knocking round. plus i keep hearing nasty stories about rust etc.

would the amg be even more of a risk!

In terms of rust, sadly yes it would. I don't think I have EVER seen or read about a W210 E55 that didn't rust it's arches, bootlock and all the other places. Really good owners kept on top of it and got goodwill repaired/replaced panels from MB but that's about as good as it gets. It's when, not if frown

I have the '01 facelift model. No rust on the boot lock or wings yet unless it was done by the previous owner.

You have to note the following based on the age of the cars now :

1. 4 Cats - Check for rattling over humps.
2. AMG specific brakes.
3. Cam cover, differential for oil leaks.
4. Shocks & springs bespoke for E55.
5. Engine mounts are hydraulic check for leaks.

You have to check these have been either sorted or have no issues. I have had the Transmision & Diff fluids changed- Diff. seal was leaking.

The car will not disappoint it is smooth and pulls like a train with 391 lb ft of torque and the auto box few cars can out-run it in real world driving conditions.

If you can find a facelift model get it as it has the works Comand (Sat Nav, Steering Wheel buttons and TV).
