2003 SL After market audio

Hi,

I might be getting a 2003 SL 500 but i really want to change the audio system to an aftermarket Alpine double din Sat Nav.

What i want to know is.

1. Is this possible.

2. what do i need to do the upgrade

3. would it mess up any other operation on the car.

Since no one has replied to this topic I'll give it a go! Go to mbworld.org and search for posts by amgfan under the title SL65 build, this guy has pretty much written the book on R230 SL cosmetic and audio upgrades.

He's got step by step
installation photos of the whole process. As for the ALPINE double din unit my friend has it on his Porsche Cayman S with the sat nav module and I wasn't enamoured with it for the price.

I'm hardly a lauddite but I find the BOSE & command combination good enough for me in the SL. I can connect my iPhone using the 3.5mm jack in the glove compartment in the SL whereas the alpine unit could take a USB stick and charge two iPods simultaneously. The alpine unit also threw a hissy fit when hot and decided to crash when needed the most on the way to Le Mans but hey at least we still had 3 decades worth of music to listen to!

CycleSi - can you tell me more about this; what age is your SL55? How much did it cost? This plays throught the COMAND?

I've got a 2002 SL500 with COMAND (the CD based version) and this would be a perfect upgrade.

Mine is April 2004. From memory I think it was approx. £290 fitted.

It works via the AV2 on the COMAND system and allows the Radio, CD and TV to work as normal. The only slight 'hiccup' is you cannot use the controls on the COMAND or steering wheel other than volume, so it is supplied with a remote control which works everything.

You can play music, videos, photos, etc.
