We owned one of these back in 1995 and they were really wonderful, over engineered cars. However I have now been offered a 1 owner 1996 E320 Cab, with climate control A/C, Electric Heated memory seats, sportline, Cruise, wood/leather steering wheel, electric steering column adjustment, ASR, very rare hard top and headlamp wash wipe with 19,000 miles with full MB service history from new by the supplying dealer. Colour is solid black with mushroom hide. I seen the car and it is unmarked and has been garaged and covered from new by its elderley lady owner who is now giving up driving (she is a friend of my parents) the car has obviously been maintained well, last invoice show expenditure of £2,500 and servicing has been consistant every 6 months and she tells me she has always told the service manager to not worry about the cost and to maintain it in "as new condition"

Has anyone any idea what this might be worth, she mentioned to me 20k, I think this is about right but dont want to take her on as she is friends with my parents, Anyone have any ideas?

Taking account of the fact you know where it has been, and how much it has had spent - the money doesn't sound totally silly.
Yes - they can be a couple of grand cheaper. Its a balancing act as you say between not wanting to upset the lady. The price she is quoting is nearer what someone like ccbenz will want to sell at - and he will need to buy in cheaper to make a living.
If I had the money, and proper garaging, I would be in there with a decent offer.

Good price. But the best thing is, you know the car.

Given its low mileage and high specification, a specialist dealer would run that car at £25,000 to £30,000. Even though values for this model have softened somewhat over the last 18 months, the best ones still command high prices. The difference here is that if you were buying from a specialist dealer, you would have no personal knowledge about the car.

If you want it and you can afford it, buy it for £20k, don't gyp the old lady, and keep it forever.

Being 040 black, you'll have to wash it constantly!

Gosh, it even has the hard top... I didn't notice that when I first posted. It seems to have every possible optional extra. A fantastic car for £20,000. To be honest, it is probably worth a bit more but I don't think you would be ripping her off at that price: as others have mentioned, a dealer would be looking to his margin.

Well I've bought it this afternoon, have been over earlier to see her and I am collecting the car on Saturday, I've been through all the paperwork and cant believe that the car has had 27 main agent services from new, every 6 months some of them only 300 miles apart! She has every MOT and invoice from new and has just returned from being serviced, another couple of hours and I think I would have missed out as she told me the dealer principle has phoned her twice today as he wanted to buy the car for his wife as she mentioned to the service manager that she was selling it.
I also noticed that in there garaged under a cover is a E320 Estate from the same year, both bought by her late husband, apparently the gardener told me it was only ever used for the first 3 months after delivery, before he died and the car has been laid up since, fully loaded and only 983 miles from new! I spoke to her about this and she said that she could never part with it. I am hoping she will let me have a look at the estate when I go on saturday with my father. Will report back on saturday after I have collected the cabriolet

Great! Congratulations!

Cars with that mileage come along once in a lifetime for most of us.

Frankly, I think you got an absolute bargain!

I remember when i worked for Mercedes a few years ago, they had just launched the New 'C' Class and we took in part exchange a 16k 190e that was absolutely mint! that had always had money spent on it regardless. the sales manager gave him 700 quid for that car and kept it himself. couldn't believe it...

Or CL500's for £4000 that are then flipped for £14,995 because a "specialist" is selling it!
