need help identifying a problem

Mercedes C250 Turbodiesel Auto (1997) - Cruising along the motorway, kicked down to overtake someone, suddenly got a low rumbly noise, which followed the revs of the car.
Pulled off the motorway, checked the engine, all looked okay, could not see any problems with the exhaust (which I thought it was to start with). Noise is still present in neutral, which I guess discounts the gearbox. The car is noticeably down on power, seems to have no boost, so it still goes okay, but takes ages to get up to speed.
Would a broken turbo make the blown exhaust pipe noises?
I've reached my destination okay after a hellish route through central london, no overheating problem, thinking about getting the AA out to have a look.
I'm afraid I'm an enthusiastic amateur so any advice would be welcome....
