159 Ti 2.4d BAD MPG????
Discussion
Took delivery of my 159Ti on Jan 2nd 2008
Just racked up 6000 miles and I'm over the moon with it apart from the fuel economy as it only delivers around 32 miles to the gallon on a run.(average motorway speed 80mph)
I understand that the 2.4 wont be as good as the 1.9 but this type of economy is simaler to my Discovery which weighs 2t and has a 2.7d in it so its not very good.
Has anyone else getting a simaler MPG or do I have a problem.
The car is fantastic, handles like its on rails, pulls like a train, gorgeuos wrap around leather heated seats and you dont see many about unlike BMW's and Audi's.
Would love to hear from any 159 users with the 2.4d under the bonnet

I'm afraid it's a common complaint with the 2.4 in the 159 and Brera. It's being blamed on the standard fitment of DPF - diesel particulate filters. You should have noticed that unlike other turbodiesels you are not emitting any black smoke! DPFs are an option on VAG (and I think BMW) engines and they are suffering from similar disappointing economy when DPF equipped.
By contrast, just to make you feel good, my little 1.9 JTDM in the GT does between 45 & 50 mpg biggrin
My old heavyweight Brera ( 3.2 V6 ) never did above 18mpg rolleyes
Nice comparison! 1.9 four-pot diesel vs. 3.2 V6 petrol.

I work for the Fiat group and im going back to Balloco (the alfa test track in Italy) in Sep for a meeting and i will be asking why they produce a 2.4d that delivers this MPG unlike my brothers Audi which has a 2.5d and delivers 40+MPG.
I will let you all know what is said!!!
Meanwhile I'll carry on enjoying the performance, handling, looks and postive comments from other petrol heads.
Thanks for all of your responces

I could get damn near that out of my 156GTA, well OK may be 28 to 29, but when you compare that to 18MPPG out of the considerably slower if slightly more powerful Brera, I would say Alfa have got this economy thing SERIOUSLY wrong.
Put that to them when you see them at Balocca please.
DPF's???, another way of saving the planet eh

The late cars are poorly engineered & will never get to compete with the Germans until they've gone on diets. Performance is the main thing to suffer because of the weight, but consumption is the other unfortunate downside.Put that to them when you see them at Balocca please.

From the moment i got my Brera, i had my concerns, i tried to reject it, i complained to Alfa in UK & Italy. They couldn't help me, which is understandable, but they need to sort it soon, or Alfa will never recapture their reputation as a drivers' car : rolleyes:
I'm with you on this Cirvy, I just jumped ship and ordered a Beemer.
I do like the new range, but those consumption figures, set against the performance and general size of the 159, it just doesn't stack up for me anymore.
It's not just the weight thing either, the 1 series coupe I ordered is no lightweight thats for sure, but it's performance and economy anre in a differant league to the equivelent 159.

Not exactly the fairest comparison.
I know its been said before but I still think 18mpg is to be expected of such a car and hardly warrants complaint.
And why on earth would you "expect" 18 mpg from a little 3.2 V6 with no special performance to it, when machines like the monster Audi RS4 estate return more
My mates V12 Aston does 19mpg FFS
Alfa have no excuse for this situation, the cars performance ( speed, acceleration, agility, handling & fuel consumption ) are woeful from a manufacturer of cars with "driver appeal".

Partly because the smaller, lighter GT you had immediately before it apparently "in day-to-day driving never really bettered 19mpg" from its (admittedly different) 3.2 V6? I'd have taken that as a sort of a guide. My mates V12 Aston does 19mpg FFS
Glad to hear your mate's Aston has improved from the 18mpg it used to do though...

The GT on a run would return significantly more than the Brera.
Glad you're paying attention though..... jeez

Just what exactly did you expect Cirvy? 25mpg? And if so was the (lets be honest) pretty small difference in MPG that important?
I did expect my Brera to be a drivers' car with reasonable performance to match. It performed badly & was a woeful drivers' car. It returned 18mpg under normal driving, if i ever drove it with zeal, it plumetted to 15mpg The Brera was easily the worst car i've owned.
On the subject of the new range of Alfas, my best mate has a 159 1.9 as a company car, & whilst he loves the looks, he's disappointed with the way it drives compared to his old A4 diesel, which was much quicker & did more mpg, go figure
Interesting DPF stuff here....
