Had my 98 6 speed in to BM this week as the check engine light was on and it was being a little awkwaed to start. Rang them up today to find out how it's doing and apparently all is NOT well!

The main ECU is completely corroded apparently (how!?) and will need to be replaced, ALONG with large amounts of the main wiring loom!!

I'm going along to look at it tomorrow and discuss what can be done as apprently it needs to be seen to be understood!

This sounds like it's going to cost me dear! I bought a C5 as they were supposed to be reliable and cheap to run!

Any advice much appreciated! Anyone know how much an ECU is?

Chris (feeling very worried as I'm buying a house at the moment and need to save up for things like a bed!!)

Is this the unfortunate "battery leaked on the computer" syndrome? If so, do you know if it was the original battery or a later replacement? Keep us posted.

Sorry to here this. If it is any concilation BM found the short on my wiring when the fuel pump kept tripping out so there auto electrician is obviously a good one.
The CPU is behind the passenger side front wheel behind the inner wheel arch liner. I remember looking at mine and thinking what a damn assed place to put a computer.......mine was covered in water spots and only a year old you can imagine how knackered a 6 year old one would be!
I agree with 5USA that it could be the battery has corroded the wiring as it sits on top of most of the wiring loom!

went to see it today. As you say VHR - passenger front wheel well. What were they thinking of?!

My control box looked like it was made out of polystyrene and cement dust. All white and just completely wrecked by salt corrosion. There must have been a small gap in the well liner where water was getting in....

All the terminals are kaput so they're going to have to replace each one within a new housing and plug it into a new ECU. ECU's not as expensive as I thought it might be though so I guess that's a bit of good news!

I just can't get over the state of the ECU and how easily it had corroded. If there were more C5's in the UK driven as a daily driver this problem would be very common I imagine. It can't take the winter salt!

As for leaking battery - replaced about a month ago but the loom damage seems to be salt corrosion tbh. It's all down near the offside wheel well.

Fingers crossed a new ECU and a bit of jiggery pokery with the terminals fixes it!

Sometimes there is a problem where the condensor outlet hose from the aircon gets blocked, this can cause water to dribble out over the ECU. Might be worth having a look at the hoses in that area while they're down there.

I agree, could be AC condensation drain is clogged or Your windshield cowl drains are clogged up.

Good luck
