Need some advice before I take my car to the garage... had a intermittent clutch fault where at times when the car had stood for a few hours occasionally after starting it wouldn't go into any gear with the pedal down, not even grating, just locked out of gear completely... starting the car in first would get around is prob and then the car would drive perfectly even in and out of neutral etc....this fault would occur perhaps one in ten starts... now it won't go in gear at all, and when starting in gear it bumps forward and can't change gear when driving... I've bled the system in case its a air problem but no difference.... I'm suspecting master cylinder failure, one question is that should I see fluid movement in e reservoir when the pedal is pressed? As it is when the pedal is pressed the fluid level stays as it is, the pedal does feel spongy with only slight resistance... I got a friend to slowly press the pedal while I held my finger over the open bleed nipple, fluid did escape around my finger but there was no pressure there until the pedal was abut 3/4 way down? Cheers for reading

You dont mention a very important thing. How does the pedal actually feel ?

And when you were bleeding it, how did you bleed it ? Was fluid pushed out as expected when you applied the pedal ?

Pedal is light and spongy, only resistance is 3/4 way down, when car driving OK the biting point is nicely half way up the travel of the pedal... bled it two ways, once with a one person method with appropriate tubing and then the old fashioned two man way down up down up etc, yes fluid was displaced but of course the the nipple open there is no resistance....I've no fluid loss or fluid under gearbox so not suspecting e slave cylinder.

Have a look at the master its quite common for the rod on the master
Cylinder to snap causing the symptoms you describe
Are you losing any fluid?

Most likely a master fault then
