Slight miss when revving up at idle,Renault 5 gt turbo
Discussion
Restoring a little Renault 5 gt turbo phase 1,1.4 turbo petrol carburettor engine(For those that don't know)It's a Solex 32 DIS something or other carb, from memory.Anyway,i'm starting her up regularly during the resto and when it's idling it's perfect, choke everything working bang on.It's just the second you take up the strain on the accelerator there's a slight hesitation/stutter then it revs free all the way up cleanly,it's always right at the start of the touching the accelerator,no miss anywhere else?I noticed a fuel leak at the accelerator pump diaphragm housing, put new diaphragm in thinking maybe that would solve it but no,carb has a new mixture screw only apart from this. There is a small L shaped downpipe that comes off the turbo then goes down, that join is leak free, but where it joins onto the rest of the system there is a slight blow, would that cause this?i intend in future to rebuild carb but run it in the meantime, anyone any ideas?Cheers!

Check the carbon brush in the centre of the distributor cap inside is not eroded or missing it will give this very symptom quick and easy to do along with a rotor arm check also
Pretty sure i installed a new cap when i bought the car a year ago,i'll double check though.rumpelstiltskin said:

look down the neck of the carb when you blip the throttle. Does the enrichment jet fire a jet of fuel into the carb as you move the throttle?
Good call had this with Webers when the lead shot had fallen out the end of the non return bolt for the accelerator pump jet rather than lack of fuel it was excessive fuel, either way as you know its designed to meter a certain amount of fuel and will cause faltering/flat spots etc with too much or too little fuel injected I had nothing but problems with my renalt 5 gt turbo all those years ago on one occasion my fuel mixture adjustment screw loosened and fell out its hole car ran terribly after that until i got another screw for it.
I would lose the carb and fit this http://www.efi-parts.co.uk/index.php?categoryID=86
to achieve this: http://www.efi-parts.co.uk/index.php?show_aux_page...
Iv heard of problems which seem fuelling related actually being ignition related as in the previous post.

Sorry for taking so long to get back.I take it this is the small brass pipoe that looks like the spout of a water tap down the carb throat? It isn't spouting anything!!I know what you mean as i've seen carbs before doing this, what part would have to be unblocked to get at it,just compressed air down the channels?Just to confirm im looking at right part, looks like number 81 on this exploded viewhttp://www.enfostuff.com/carbs/carburetor-solex32P...

That's it, are you sure the accelerator ump diagram is assembled correctly ? and that its supply and feed channels are clear ? also make sure the non return valve/ball bearing in the pump jet is not stuck or jammed because this will restrict/shut the supply to the jet.http://www.enfostuff.com/carbs/carburetor-solex32P...

I just fitted a new diaphragm a few weeks ago and im 100% sure its fitted ok.I'll check supply and maybe observe the linkage going to the diaphragm to see if that might need adjusted.I'll check it tomorow,Thanks againCan't believe this, managed to get the jet squirting fuel down the throat of the carb, but,i 'think' two washers that fell off the carb top,one went down the engine bay,teh other 'might' have gon down the carb damnit.I started up teh carb and there was a light, metailly rattly sound?I instantly thought the washer had gone down the. carb as it's always ran really nice with no strange noises. The noise 'seemed' to come right from the inlet carb, not so much across at the head.Checked all the plug holes and used a magnet in them to howk around but nothing, also used a long thin magnet down the inlet manifold branches but can't find anything!
Typical of my luck, get one thing fixed and another problem turns up.Is it possible the washer could stay in the manifold and not automatically go into the head?
I remember once my mate done this, little wire with a bit of blu-tack on the end down one of the plug holes, out came the washer, simple!

If I were you i'd find both the washers....and no they won't "sit" in the head they'll get sucked in and do damage. Unlucky!Typical of my luck, get one thing fixed and another problem turns up.Is it possible the washer could stay in the manifold and not automatically go into the head?

One was on the deck, one unaccounted for.I meant would the washer just stay in the inlet manifold and get stuck there, instead of being sucked into the engine?rumpelstiltskin said:

It wont stay in the manifold long before moving and either smashing hell out of your valves and valve seats or embedding itself into the cylinder head or piston you need to retrieve it to my knowledge good secondhand 5GT Turbo engines are hardly in abundance IMO please don't try to wing it Edited by Sardonicus on Sunday 20th October 21:50

My mate must have been lucky when it happened to him.We just fished it out the combustion chamber, it was a bit eh? Compressed but no lasting damage to speak of! It was just the rattling was very easy to locate, it was coming 'exactly'from the inlet manifold area.I'll whip off the manifold first and hope I can retrieve it.Good news is the washer was quite thin and small, I'll have to keep my fingers crossed!!Edited by Sardonicus on Sunday 20th October 21:50
As for engines being rare there's two in my shed lol, thank god!:-)I was always going to buy one of those boroscope, endoscope things with the video display on them, Lidls had them I think, would be handy to have at times like this.

Things are going downhill pretty quickly and I don't underdtand it.No signs of any fragments in the manufold or cylinders. Will all the spark plugs out engine turns over smoothly and freely with no noises.I put new plugs back in, turned it over and it turned free but just back fires every now and again, won't fire up??
Im going to do a compression test anf see if that shows anything.Cars been lying for a while but its always been regularly started and starts first time every time.I knew there was a new dizzy cap on the car but took it off, it was filthy!! Cleaned it up but it made absolutely no difference.

Sounds like you put the plug leads back on the wrong way. Such an easy mistake to make on these engines.Im going to do a compression test anf see if that shows anything.Cars been lying for a while but its always been regularly started and starts first time every time.I knew there was a new dizzy cap on the car but took it off, it was filthy!!
