I have 2 differentials, one open with a 4.6 and one an LSD with 4.9. I'd rather use the 4.6 (as a temporary measure until I can find a 4.2). I don't really have a clue about diffs (excuse my terminology). Can I undo the 2 bolts either side and take the main unit out of both. Then swap over the final drive gears, then bolt the units into the other diff (to match up with the pinion). Normally i'd just try this. What i'm unsure about is things like lash, backlash, etc. Will this come into play?

You can remove the main diff unit and crownwheel from the casing no problem.

You can swap the 4.6 CW onto the LSD unit. Then refit this back into the 4.6 pinion'd casing.

Yes you will need to set the lash, but that isnt too difficult. It may be via shims, or adjustable side plates.

Pajero Mk1 is the 4.6, Delica L300 is the 4.8 LSD, Hyundai L100 Van is the 4.2 i'm going to look for. The axle (Pajero Mk1) is going on a Toyota Corolla AE86

Well...now obviously everything Ive said assumes the diff fitments are the same. And you arent just trying to piece together two totally incompatible parts !

They are all the same.

I've just watched this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dAqAqODmcj4

It's helped explain it a lot but it's well out of my league, I don't have the same style torque wrench to measure pre-loads. I think i'm going to just bolt it together and see how it is on the road. It's temporary until I get a 4.2. Then maybe i'll get that all set up properly.

I can't help think the average gearbox place probably skips half of the things talked about in the video.

Doing what you propose is simple. You dont need any fancy tools other than a dial gauge for measuring the lash.

You dont need to measure pre-load on bearings etc etc. Just apply some common sense and it is very easy.
IMO the only awkward part when it comes to diffs is the pinion. But you wouldnt be touching it

And just throwing it together and driving for a while is not the right idea. Once any damage is done, the CWP will be scrap. So it needs to be right.
But as said, just swapping diff units, ie crownwheels is simple.
