Posted this on Merc forum - thought I'd try here:

My brother in law drives a Merc V 220 cdi and it suffers from an issue which appears to be fuel related.

When for example the van is driven uphill on the motorway e.g. 55/60 mph and he then tries to accelerate, the van cuts out completely and comes to a dead halt.

If he leaves the vehicle in gear during slow down/stop after cutting out, the van will usually start again. However, if the van cuts out and he puts it into neutral during the coasting/slow down/stop, the vehicle cranks for a while before it will start again.

Fuel/diesel filter has been replaced a number of times. Fuel tank removed last week and it was clean.

Is there another filter between the tank and the filter in the engine bay?

Feels as if there is some restriction in the fuel supply?

Any help appreciated

Thank
