I have heard about how bad this engine really is, to be honest I thought it was all exaggerated, but I now know, the BXE engine really is a pile of ****.
It all started with a slight rattle from the cam area, took the top off to find the camshaft a bit worn and a couple of bad hydraulic lifters, nothing strange there. Replaced everything, but the noise cam back, VERY quickly. took the top off again and found very little oil up there.
Checked oil pressure and was O.K. so took off the oil pan to check the oil strainer, to my shock it was full of bits of bearing material, further investigation revealed number three big end bearing had spun in the con-rod, It was NOT rattling. So I guess I am lucky as the conn rod did not pop out of the block for a look around !!If you have a VW with a BXE engine fitted and it is between 2007 & 2009 I would be a little afraid.

Interesting. The old 1.9 PD units in the MK4 Golf were strong as an Ox if looked after. This is generally the outcome of bean counters over-ruling the engineers.

Would you like to guess how expensive, how slow, and poor the economy would be on a mass production engine if the OEM wanted 100% reliability? (remember, they make hundreds of thousands of these things!)
