Hi im new to this and would like to get some advise on fixing my car.
basically the fan on my car comes on straight away as soon as I turn the engine off, I only moved the car about 20 yards from street to drive and it came on for about 5 mins...is this normal?
Please can I get help with this.

It would help if in your next post you included which fan comes on when you switch the ignition off

Its the engine fan as if its been running ages.

What do you mean by "as if its been running ages"? You posted that it ran for 5 minutes after switching off
Has your vehicle got Air Conditioning?

Ok ill explain better. Basically the fan on the engine heating came on and shouldnt have as it was only moved so many yards.
I wonder why it is doing this and would it be something to do with the heating sensor?

OK Here we go - The diagram you have is for a 1999 VTR , I am pretty sure your vehicle will be wired the same

We are only interested in the 2 diagrams on the Right of the picture

I am posting this now so you know I have not gone away - i will continue typing up another post and post it as soon as I can - may take 5 Mins

Below is the list of parts fitted as the picture is not very good

12 - Cooling Fan Switch

13 - Cooling Fan Resistor

14 - Cooling Fan Relay

11 - Cooling Fan (Motor)

10 - Fuse

This could be an easy fix - If you look at the Diagram you will see that one Terminal of the Cooling Fan Motor is always connected to the Battery through Fuse 5 (Looks like 5 to me but no worries)

Test 1 - You or whoever first must disconnect the Cooling Fan Switch that is fitted into a water hose or into the Thermostat Housing or Cylinder Head - If by disconnecting the Cooling Fan Switch the Motor stops running - Replace the Switch and you should be good to go

If you still have the problem with the switch disconnected - Move on -

Test 2 - Find the Cooling Fan Relay and disconnect it (I think the Cooling Fan Relay is fitted behind the Front Grill) - If by disconnecting the Cooling Fan Relay the Motor stops running - Replace the Cooling Fan Relay - Should you or whoever have a problem disconnecting the Cooling Fan Relay it will be because the terminals are all corroded or burnt and brute force is required - If the Cooling Fan Relay Holder is burnt or damaged in any way you will need to cut it off and wire a new Relay with new terminals or Holder and make sure to waterproof it with Silicone

I hope you get sorted and dont hesitate to post back if you are having difficulties

No problem - I have just been looking around Google and it looks like the Cooling Fan Switch is fitted to the Right side of the Radiator when looking into the Engine Bay from the front but I cant be sure on this as I am on a trip down memory lane with this fault

As I mentioned previously - Dont hesitate to post back if you are unsure about anything

A friend of mine had a mk1 VTR a few years ago, his did the same fan on everytime for ages after the engine was turned off. His happened to be a blocked heater matrix, may be worth trying to flush the old coolant out and clean the system and then fill up with nice fresh coolant.

Was mentioned up there, but hasn't been ruled out, does the car have Air Conditioning, and is it turned off when you start the car up.

Some cars as a safety feature run the cooling fans on the radiator anytime the AC is turned on. This is because it is quite a strain on the engine and is more the likely to cause it to reach or exceed operating temperatures.

Some cars, such as a Ford Focus, will auto turn on the air conditioning if the fan direction knob is set to Windscreen demist.
