Tinted Clearcoat Over Flat Yellow?!
Discussion
Hi,
Hopefully an easy question for someone (I've not had any luck with Google)...
I bought an aerosol paint kit (consisted of a Zinc Yellow basecoat can and a clearcoat can) for my Puma from a Ford dealer to paint a small area that I had de-rusted and primed. I followed the instructions, painting several coats of base followed by a couple of coats of clearcoat (with the appropriate drying times between each coat). All was going well until it came to the clearcoat- I noticed straight away that the clearcoat had a fairly strong green tint to it. Is this normal? I thought that the greeny colour might disappear when the clearcoat dried- which it did in some places- but I was left with patches of laquer that still looked decidedly green even the next day!
Anyone experienced this or know if the laquer is supposed to be tinted green? It's not a pearlescent colour or anything like that, just a standard Ford flat yellow from the Millenium edition Puma and Focus. I shook the can thorougly before spraying. I can only think that maybe I put the clearcoat on too thickly?
Cheers,
Steve

Don't know about your specific colour, but using a tinted clear over flat base isn't unknown - I've come across it most on a Honda red (can't remember the name).
It's a git, because you can't really blend out a small repair on a large panel as the tint darkens the surrounding area, as it seems you've found.

I've just checked the formula for 'Ford Zinc Yellow'on Nexa Aquabase+ & no mention of it being a 3-coat colour or requiring a tinted clearcoat.
Sounds like the kit was duff - unless its a solvent basecoat & the clearcoat is also solvent based in which case excessive application of clearcoat/insufficient time to allow basecoat to flash off could partially dissolve the basecoat into the clear.
Normal clearcoat should be 'water white'.

If the base was fully cured as stated above then the following could apply.

Its not normal in the least. Ive known problems in the past with the clear reacting with the ballbearing or even the inside of the tin, but it yellows the tint, so don't know where the green comes from. I would take it back to Ford and spray a bit in the Aerosol Cap and show them. Hopefully they will replace it for you.Gassing Station | Bodywork & Detailing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
