Any reason why this should not be okay? I do a low annual mileage and change oil once a yr, always used branded stuff before. Fully synthetic is only £20 for 5L smile

I did buy some 20/50 cheap from Wilco's once, needed a top up and this was the nearest place. It was like water so sat on the shelf and used for dashpots and stuff frown

It will be made by someone like tetrosyl so I wouldn't worry.

Most of the fully synthetic grades (e.g. 0W30) are like water but 20W50 would be like treacle by comparison, very unlike water!

As for the whether the Asda oil is ok, you could just check the various manufacturers specifications that are normally listed on the container.

if it meets your manufacturers requirements it should be fine. Maybe it's daft but I stick to Castrol Edge in mine. It's expensive but not that bad considering how long it lasts.

£20 seems quite expensive for what I feel you consider to be a cheap end oil. I pay about that for Valvoline 20-50 racing oil (fully synthetic is a similar price) from Eurocar Parts, this is of course when they offer discounts which is normally all the time. I get cheap 20-50 for my MGB for about £10 for 5 litres, I change it quite often though as the car doesn't do much mileage which will do more damage to the oil.

Before this turns into an oil brand snobbery thread it's worth noting that (obviously) ASDA don't make their own oil so common sense suggests it's a 'proper' brand but with their branding.

Isn't Tesco oil Comma oils?

I know all oils are not the same but those of us with Lambos and Astons won't be topping up with ASDA oils. For Mr Average I'm happy they're just fine.

I was about to post the same.

I've used 10/40 from Asda, Wilko and ECP. All fine imo but then I'm putting them into a volvo 940 not anything fancy!

Belive me the Wilco stuff was very nasty looking, usually use Halfords Classic 20/50

Seriously, how much of your "annual running cost" is down to the difference in price of the oil?

I'd be putting decent stuff in it.

I wonder how many people read that word and wondered WTF the OP is on about.

But yes, I used to lob any old oil in dashpots too. It tended to leak away and be burnt in pretty short order, anyway.

I put over 100'000 miles on my last bike (Yamaha XJ900s) servicing it with Wilkinsons 10w-40 Semi Synthetic (around £13 for 5L) every 4k miles.
Now with 182'000 miles on the clock, it's new owner is still riding it daily.

In my old 998 a series I used any old 20/50 I got my hands on, it was fine. The asda stuff will be fine for normal use in older engines that take it.

Most cars with regular oil changes won't experience a problem , having said that

A guy at work had an old fiesta 53 plate, he drove it to work as usual then noticed it was dripping oil

He asked the maintenance guy to have a look at it, what he found was the oil filter had rusted through

He asked when he'd last changed the oil, I've never changed the oil, what never , no

7 years, doing 8-10,000 miles a year on the oil that was in it when he bought it , even then all he did was fit a new filter and top it up

He drove it for another 2 years until the clutch went then PXd it

btw I used cheap crap morrisons oil in my piece-o-st renault mpv.

Glad I did cos eventually it failed terminally on chassis rust. Expensive oil is overrated.

Yes, those are very fair points. It's astounding how much apparent abuse an engine can take. It's especially relevant if the engine burns a bit of oil and the owner keeps topping up, effectively giving the car a "rolling oil change". Filters last pretty well too.

You'll be asking what points and condensers are next wink
Dashpots are what we have on SU carburetors, you know, the things before throttle bodies. Basically there is a piston with the needle on the end that rises up and down in the dashpot as more vacuum is applied as the throttle is opened. The piston is damped by about 30 grade oil, but you can also use 20-50 in them as well.
