Well its dark now, and i can already smell the usual drivel of winter threads starting, so maybe we can keep it all in one?

Il start to cover most grounds

HIDS- people fit these to their cars, some think they are legal and pass a MOT, some people dont, some kits are fitted incorrectly, some are fitted correctly and cause no problems what so ever.

OEM LED & Xenons. Yes they are bright, no they are not a menance, no they arent going to ban them even on a white Audi Q7.

Driving with fog lights on - it happens all year round when its not foggy, you just dont notice it when its not dark, no it doesnt dazzle you. Other drivers are just thick.

People with a bulb out - Yes it happens alot, some people might know and may be on the way to get it fixed, some might not, maybe try a friendly flash instead of moaning about it on the internet 8 hours later.

Driving with DRLs only. Some drivers are just dim. try a flash, and if it doesnt work move on with your day, some front lights are better than none.

LED brake lights. yes they are a thing, yes people keep their foot on the brakes at the lights and in traffic, No they dont burn your retinas.

People not demisting/ icing their cars - Annoying and quite dangerous. Nothing you can do, ensure you are enraged all day.

Will hot water crack my windscreen? Maybe. maybe not. try lukewarm, or get out of bed 5 mins early

Winter tyres are just as good as 4 wheel drive. wow ok, they might be but how many people really spin off the road in a fireball of doom because they have summer tyres on their car.

I overtook a range rover in my old RWD shed with winter tyres and no traction control, am i better than everyone else. - No.

Which winter tyres?- What ever ones where recommend in last years thread, or the year before, or the year before.

Woman in RWD BMW looses it on a roundabout. - Some people dont have a clue about RWD and how to control a skid, move along and dont crash into her. You Driving god.

Silly person puts snowchains on the wrong wheels. We have all seen the BMW 1 series with chains on the front. Its not funny anymore.

Which winter hack? - You dont need a whole new car in winter. If you do buy what ever car you type first in your "what car" thread

They havent gritted my road, what to do? Lock yourself away until your blood pressure gets so high your veins pop.

I think that covers most, if not have a moan i know we all love that.

I'll contribute to this thread when they start spreading salt.

That being said, it was 19 degrees this afternoon, they'll be throwing it all over the place soon.

This will be my first winter with all season tyres so I will be interested to see how I get on.

Never used them or winters before, I just stuck a paving slab in the boot of my 3 series and had no problems paperbag

People who think winter tyres are necessary.

Really? If you live in the highlands or something yes, but if you live in a cul de sac in Reading? Get a grip (no pun intended).

If you live in cul de sac in Reading, why not have not have them? It's not just for snow, but conditions under a certain temperature. The tyres wear less in those conditions too, so by swapping them on and off every 6 months you actually get the maximum lifetime out of both tyres.

That should read "with bald linglong summer tyres - none of you can drive in snow" :-)

If foglights are dazzling you then they're adjusted wrong (unless they're on a high vehicle and you're in a particularly low one, in which case bad luck). Foglights should be relatively low powered and shining low along the ground.

If they're bright and deliberately aimed high then they aren't foglights, they're driving lights and they'll be useless in fog as they reflect off it back into the driver's eyes...

PH, pedantry matters.

Saying that I find that fog lights are pretty bright. They're not bad as they throw the beam low and wide, but if somebody crests a hill toward you they're really quite bright.

Also to add to the thread- what's your emergency kit incase you get trapped in 26ft of snow?

OP, you're too late; should have got this in a month or so ago, when the sky was still light at dusk. That's a really bad time of year for the lighting: the sky is bright enough to deactivate all night vision, but there's still not enough light on the ground for you to be able to see easily. Too light for rods, too dark for cones.

(Additionally, it's quite noticeable that the latest crop of HID/LED lights are rather better than the old ones, being brighter and yet less likely to dazzle oncoming traffic. Presumably there was some critical mass of complaints.)

Fair point about crests, and some probably are brighter. Foglights on cars I've had have only been 35w bulbs which isn't that bright compared to a dipped beam headlight, but newer cars may have brighter ones.

You've just about covered the main points.
But we both know there will be 5000+ pages of inane drivel, argueing these very points over the coming months.
Tell me I'm wrong?

Funnily enough I live in a cul de sac in Reading and have been fine driving in the winter including when we've had the closest thing to decent snow fall recently. It's probably worth having the tyres for 1 month of the year with the weather/temps here (not worth it in my mind). The only thing that concerns me in the winter time are the idiots in 4x4s with low profile summer tyres on who still tear around the area, not driving to the conditions.

I guess it's an individual thing, but some folks lack the common sense to put their lights on when its dark or viability is poor.

Not just for your own vision, but for other road users to see you too.

Chatting to my coal man last friday. A Top bloke John is, he goes out of his way to get my coal to me here on this welsh hillside.
Anyway on the subject of the weather, because that is mostly what you talk to the coal man about.... He told me that when he does his deliveries he always talks to, and listens to the farmers.
The farmers who he delivers to, he said, had asked him if he had noticed that he birds were flying south early this year. This is apparently a sign of a very bad winter to come. Very Very bad .
Now I like John (as a coalman) and he always treats me fair. But he is in the business of selling coal.
