Hi All,
Spent a lovely week in the south of France at the end of March in a Hertz hire car. On Saturday, I received two letters. First one was from Hertz advising that they had charged my credit card €20 admin fee for having to share my details with the French authorities.
Second letters was from the French speeding body (could not believe this, as it seemed too efficient for the French authorities) advising me that I had been clocked @ 98KPH in a 90 KPH zone, so effectively 60 in a 55mph zone. Fine €45. I am guilty so will pay up.

The interesting bit is that they only give you an allowance of 3 KPH over the limit, which I thought was a little stingy.

The Shame of it is after many years of V8 wonderfulness, the first speeding ticket I received was at the wheel of a Fiat 500. paperbag

You have been warned!

France has been like this for a while now. A friend was caught doing 6kph over the limit heading back to Nice airport last summer.

An ex-colleague got done for 143 in a 130 limit - 10%, and €45.

I thought that was a little harsh, but yours is worse.

Off there this summer, think the cruise control will be used a lot...

Black insulating tape changing one letter on your plate is the answer.
On hire cars.

A lot of trade plate delivery drivers over here do that. Means the chance of them getting stopped in an untaxed used car is reduced.

Sometimes it's hard not to infringe local traffic regs in an unfamiliar place.

I live in the south west of France. I've been done two or three times for small amounts over. 117 in a 110 limit on autoroute and 76 in a 70 in Bordeaux. 70kmh is about 43mph, I was doing 48, just under 5mph over. They're really keen on motorways and dc's. We have been seeing lots of speed traps on roads through villages too, unfortunately none on our road where every other car seems to be doing 200% of the speed limit.
