Has the mobile version gone?!
Discussion
The "full" website is rubbish on a mobile. Slower than a slow thing, need to zoom so much you lose most of the page. Looks like I'll not be using PH at all other than from home now. Retrograde step - bean counters no doubt decided that there aren't many people viewing on a mobile, so close it down.

Any commment team PH? Is this a temporary thing? The full site is a real chore to use on an android device..
Choose the "GTI" theme in your forum preferences and it'll all go finger-friendly on a mobile screen while remaining similar to "Big Blue" on your desktop. Works really well for me.threadlock said:

Thanks that's a bit easier on my phone. Is there a way to view the overall general gassing page on that skin do you know? The view you get when you hit general gassing on the normal skin with a mix from all the sub forums? The mobile site is dead and PH has changed to a responsive skin as it's replacement.
If you move to www.pistonheads.com then you have a choice of skins (under My Preferences) as follows:
Classic - A really old skin from 2003 or so (not supported)
Big Blue - The default skin for viewing when not logged in and new registrations, though gives desktop view on a mobile (will soon be deprecated)
Mobile (beta) - The first version of a responsive site (deprectated)
Beta 2 - The new skin we are working on which will be responsive and thus show nicely depending on your screen width <- this is the replacement for mobile.pistonheads.com and will become the default view for logged in users and new registrations.

This isn't really an issue but there doesn't seem to be a discussion thread...
I'm confused about mobile. Is forum access via mobile.pistonheads.com going away? The alternative seems...compromised.
Yes it is... but we have a bit of work still to do to maintain the SEO benefits that site has and migrate them to www.pistonheads.com. So at the moment it is now read only (as you cannot log into it).I'm confused about mobile. Is forum access via mobile.pistonheads.com going away? The alternative seems...compromised.

The mobile site is a copy of the forum run by a third party, which meant any updates to the forum were harder to do and expensive. It also had funcuallity missing, so it was decided to create a responsive skin as it's a lot easier than creating a new mobile site. I personally like the new skin on my iPhone, it's easy to use and navigate.
I seem to be posting on all the "why isn't the mobile site working" type threads in the past week or so. Would it be possible to make a sticky saying the mobile site no longer works, put directions to how to get to the GTI skin and explain why the decision to move to a responsive skin?

Ok, so been using the GTI theme since last night. Generally it's OK, couple of gripes:
The lack of a crumb trail slows down navigation and IMO is the most frustrating change.
Quick links to the last/first few pages of a thread was useful.
A lot of real estate is taken up with individual post headers, can the name, time, reply buttons etc not go onto one line?
ETA: is there an official thread for suggestions?

Crazy, completely crazy.
I personally was experiencing some issues on login to the mobile site, but I'm surprised to see they have killed it off. The problem is, what has always attracted me to the pistonheads forum over the years has been its 'no thrills, fuss free' approach, which worked very well with the mobile app. This full website on a small devise just isn't going to work. It doesn't matter how good the technology, or improvements - it's always about adoption.
Bad times... He says with his face right up close to the zoomed in screen : /

Use the GTI theme - then it adapts properly to small screens and looks pretty much like Big Blue on the desktop. The old mobile.pistonheads.com site was run by a third party and was extremely difficult/impossible for them to update to reflect the new login changes, etc.I personally was experiencing some issues on login to the mobile site, but I'm surprised to see they have killed it off.
