Hi,

On the way home last night I noticed an electrical 'hot' smell in the car. Analysis today shows that the yellow connector is beginning to melt. I'm not sure yet whether I'll go for replacing with a 50A anderson connector or soldering the wires together. I notice reference in other threads on the subject to needing a big enough soldering iron. Please can someone tell me if my 40w soldering iron will be man enough for the task?

Thanks,

Ralph

Prob not on it's own. Can you get a hot air gun to the wire in question?
We have a weller soldering iron - unlike most, it's temperature controlled, so on a big soldering job, it will provide more power, but I think this would struggle with a 50a wire.
Sometimes we supplement the power of the iron with a second soldering iron, or the heat gun, depending on access.

Just a thought.

Cheers

I've got a 75w, works a treat on fat wires like those, get in fast and out again before heat transfers up the cable melting the insulation.

40w may be enough, have you got any scrap cable of similar gauge to practice on?

Unless you're 100% confident in your iron and your ability I'd go for the "Choc Block", I did 5 years ago as a temporary fix, still all fine.. if it ain't broke don't fix it wink

I'd say heat gun is a definite no no in that vicinity!!!
