No matter what you call it if you love planes these are two very boring vidz for people who know no better but great way to spend Friday night rather than watching the tv

The DC-9 was the original. The MD-82 is an improved DC-9. The 717 an improved MD-82. (I think. Correct me if im wrong)

More or less correct. The DC-9 was launched by the original Douglas company around 1963 and first flew in 1965. In its original versions it was described as the DC-9 Series 10 to 20.

The Series 30, 40 and 50 were stretched versions.

In the 1970s,by which time Mc Donnnell had taken over Douglas to form McDonnell Douglas, the DC-9 underwent a further stretch to what was the named the DC-9 Series 80.

Mc Donnell Douglas decided that old "DC" prefix did not properly indicate that the aircraft were now a Mc Donnell Douglas product rather than a Douglas product so they changed the DC-9 80 Series to the MD80 Series. Later they developed the MD90 family of advanced aircraft.

In 1997, Mc Donnell Douglas was taken over by Boeing and Boeing decided to rename the MD90 family as "Boeing 717s".
Boeing had not used the 717 numbers on any of their civil airliners so they decided that they would use it on the rebranded MD90. However, they had actually already used the 717 number as the "in-house" designation for their Boeing C-135 military transport variants.
It was an example of marketing overcoming sense.
