Met an old friend earlier who has a 330d same year as my 330i. Easy question haha which is quicker? I'd of thought mine tbh but I reckon I'd get done from the standing start then catch up later? Anyway I'm not too fussed because let's face it I've got THAT noise v diesel. Sorry diesel owners !

I'm saying it tongue in cheek it's a serious question. Wondered if anyone has put it to the test that's all

Surely you can read which is quicker in your handbook.

I doubt the 330i makes 320lb/ft, more likely 320nm (235lb/ft), similarly the 330d won't be making 520lb/ft more likely 520nm (382lb/ft).

I should think the in gear times would be quicker in the 330D.

There's not going to be a lot in it.

The 330I is 268BHP and 236 pound foot, the 330D is 231/242 BHP and 369/384 pound foot.

I think you'd struggle against a remapped 330D, with typically another 20HP and well over double the torque than yours.

Still, you get the nice noise, we get the MPG!

Yeh thought as much tbh. I know a remaped 330d would be a weapon like. Yeh you sure do get the mpg must be nice! My mates just got a 320d efficient dynamics for a company car and got 68mpg on a run to work on the A1 the other day I'm a bit jealous !

If you go on you tube there's a race between a e90 330d and a e90 325i, it's from a rolling start, the 330d only gets slightly ahead then the 325i starts to pull. Don't quite understand why as the 330d should win.

To be honest it don't matter which is quicker, for me it's how a car makes you feel, just tell your mate to rev his car then rev yours. smile

The diesel is probably heavier and has less of its weight over the driven wheels. I would put my money on the 330i.

Only if you're in the wrong gear in the 330i - I reckon it comes with a torque multiplier that can controlled from the comfort of the driving seat.;)

Good luck with that idea!smile

Many years ago I got deluded with the option of a company car/car allowance and interest-free loan and went diseasel!

Bought a 320td then replaced it with a 123d, but now I don't have any of the potential tax issues I drive a 325ti as a daily.

123d was 201bhp, 325ti is 192bhp, both around 7 seconds 0 to 60 but I know which one I would rather drive, regardless of which is ultimately quicker!

Even if the 330d turns out to be quicker it will still sound like a tractor!laugh

The torque figures mean nothing, the bhp is all you need to know, the 330i is 30bhp more and slightly lighter, it is obviously the faster car.

You could probably gear a 320d to get to 60mph quicker than the 330i but that doesn't mean it is faster.

Torque is simply what you multiply with revs to get the power figure, bhp. And BHP is all you need to know.

I had this argument with someone about his 3.0tdi A6, he argued till blue in the face his was quicker then my 3.2 v6 petrol. In the end I made him take it down the dual carrigeway, he started to pull away quicker but he was soon left when we got to 60mph and started to get left pretty quickly.
His was .1 second quicker to 60mph on paper, but that is only one figure, him with 220bhp vs my 255bhp and lighter was only ever going to be one winner.
He was genuinely shocked and still can't get his head round why torque tells you sod all, it means nothing without knowing the revs. A 1000nm of torque on a car that revs to 3000rpm is only equal to 500nm of torque on a car that revs to 6000rpm, 400nm of torque on a car that revs to 8000rpm with beat the car with a 1000nm of torque for overall power.

That is why I always chuckle when people say from 40-70 the diesel is quicker, of course it is on paper, because it is always taken in gear, 3rd or 4th for both, but on the road the petrol owner would drop down a gear and leave the diesel lagging somewhat behind.

I know. Torque remains the most misunderstood automotive metric, despite the equation being pretty simple even for a 10 years old. Isolating torque from power, revs and gearing is nonsensical.

In the real world translates to...... I drive a petrol like a diesel and wonder why it feels slow?
