I've been looking for a new family wagon and have decided on an E500, around 5 years old. Despite a fair bit of googling I can't find much out about them. Is this just a combination of rarity and reliability? Anyone have any first hand experience of one?

Rare as hens' teeth. In the last few years I have seen precisely one; a coupe.

E500 sales were always tiny and seemed to fall off a cliff when the facelift 211 came out (2006?). I've also only ever seen one of them.

Shame, as they are great cars.

If you look on howmanyleft.com at W212s it says there are around 50 across the various elegance, avantagrde etc. range that were taxed in 2015.

I have only seen 2 estates come on the market in the last 4 years.

You'll be lucky to find one of these for sale & most will be coupes.

Thanks for the replies guys. My impatience has got the better of me so it looks as though I've bought an E63 instead cool Should be picking it up in the next week or so

Sensible man. I've had an e55 estate for a few weeks now and it goes really quite well!

I missed this first time round. We have a W212 E500 wagon. It's vanishingly rare I suspect, and I also suspect we may struggle to move it on.
Enjoy the 63...

While I don't doubt the market is somewhat niche, I suspect you'll find a taker quickly enough. I couldn't justify (i.e., afford) one new, but if they existed on the second hand market in an elegant or comfort-orientated specification and colour scheme, I'd snap one up and I doubt I'm alone. The NA E500 looks like it was the pick of the range.

Metallic blue. Smallest wheels possible. Air suspension, HK hi-fi and panoramic roof.

Genuinely all the family car we need.

Will do chief. Frankly I've no idea what to replace it with.

The need to do 30,000 miles a year may lead to replacement, otherwise we're smoking about in this one for some time.

535i tourer?

It seems most manufacturers offer almost nothing between a rough 4 pot diseasel and a ridiculous 500bhp+ head banger.

F11 535i was on the list. I even found a manual, but it sold before we got to it.

Problem is, my father has a F11 already...

If you are selling Mr_E I know of a buyer! As for the E63 I'll be collecting it this Friday. Some of you may have seen it before

Coming to the thread a little late but thought I'd chip in as a current W212 E500 owner.

Mine is a 4 door saloon and the V5 has it down as an E500 Sport. The dealer that sold it to me told me it was a "limited edition" and as well as the AMG body kit and floor mats it's got a little AMG "limited edition" plaque on the engine cover.

Trading up from a much loved W211 E500 (6 years owned and around 60k miles done) I waiting patiently for the right E500 to come along. During that patient wait I missed out on a few because they do seem to get snapped up quickly (if the blue estate on mentioned about was bought nr Guildford - you got there first!) I also avoided one up Cumbria direction that was listed for ages but possibly didn't move because of the black grill/wheels/mirrors combo that someone had thought was a good idea to spec or add on. It wasn't a good idea for resale - not to me anyway.

That last point takes me nicely to the whole point of an E500. Rapid and comfortable transportation in a reasonably subtle and unassuming way.

Thinking mans E63 wink

It was, and I actually got there second. Long story...

Mine's also on 17's amazing ride.

Didn't manage to find one with HK & Pano but did get ILS, auto main beam, distronic, lane assist, night vision, universal media interface, sun pack, memory pack etc etc..

I'll just have to distract myself with those toys.

First world problems etc

I didn't know 17's went over the front brakes. We're on 18's.

I've since changed jobs and now how to commute, I've treated myself to a knackered hatchback. smile
