Why is this car so cheap, 1 year old and only 800 miles

Because it's very low spec probably. Base engine, small brakes, not even a covered dash. Cheap way in but Russ's is hugely better than that for less money.

I don't think that's a good buy at 40k personally.

Very low spec car. To get it to the standard most modern Ultima are built too with lS engine I would think another 20-30K. Alternative is to buy a lovely 2002 fully sorted ultima with every possible must have (including some only just available on the evo) and 650bhp LS7 (500miles) for £45K!

Actually, I have a different take.... I look at this as a blank slate for someone to do your own thing. I wanted to build one but bought a car to rebuild myself and there is not much left now I haven't redone, but for me, I got use out of it while doing it!! Saved a whole loads of labour on stuff that doesn't excite me too..... riveting stuff for example.
Yes I've spent a shed load but its now my car the way I want it (almost). I don't feel any worse off as I've been messing around with cars so Long I know I could build one if I wanted. Anyway....

Even the basic car with no engine or box is £45k ish so if you are considering one, considering the savings on the engine and box and labour, it will suit someone out there that doesn't have the time to build from scratch, but has ideas in the way they want their car to look.

Exactly what I have done.

And it still cost a small fortune, but then I doubt it will ever be "finished" wink

For my '2 pennerth' as many of you know I too bought used after being persuaded so by this forum. In my opinion a really good decision. If you go for this I feel that you need to identify a really well built (possibly professional) car but with the basics of here you want end up. That means it should have the engine you want and the gearbox if possible. Most people know from looking at this forum that many if not most will want to change some things on a used car from having lived with the car for a while. That applies to me. Hopefully this winter will see many of those changes I want to make being made. I think the main point though is you will almost certainly save a chunk of money going the used route.
The only thing you will miss out on is the personal achievement of a self build. Thats one itch I still have.

I purchased a well used car, which I drove for a few months but the condition irritation every time I walked up to it. So rebuild time.

I changed nearly everything and replaced most of it. It effectively ended up a new car in most respects. New engine, gearbox, wheels, exhaust, fuel system, cooling system, paint job, interior retrim and digital instruments, etc, etc, etc.

Cost me just as much as building a new car from scratch. However, no SVA or cats so a few bits that probably wouldn't pass, plus many changes to 'Factory Standard' that I wanted.

There is the bonus of an older car with old tech SBC from new, it will never need an emissions test as there is no book value for emissions, so it is a "visible smoke" test.
Mine started out SBC but is now LS and emissions is never an issue come MOT time.

But if you design an LS car properly you have no issue MOT time.

I think there's a bit of a stigma around LS cars, especially 7s, perhaps due to a certain person from the NW who starting building cars as a business and always struggled to get LS7s through emmissions tests. It's not difficult nowadays.

Going back to the original post, I still think it's expensive, Russ's or Guys for that money would be a no brainer for me - that is just too low spec in too many areas, IMO smile
