Hi guys,

I've been saving up for a while now for a new car and have a budget of about £15,000 for both car and any work needed on it. However, I'm at a loss as to what to actually get? And I'm wondering if you have any suggestions?

I would like a fun car which is easy to work on and is s nice driver, and it needs to look the part too!

Preferably it can't be too powerful as I'm only 22 and insurance would be a nightmare.

Any age is fine, and I have no preference of make, colour, shape, etc.

Cheers smile

The mx5 is on my list of potentials but unfortunately I'm not overly fond of them...

Ahaha I would love one, but I quoted one the other day and it'd cost me £4000 a year! That's garaged, with a tracker, no crashes, no points and in a low crime rate area!

Garages seem to make quotes more, but not that much haha.

Hmm, I haven't really considered this as I thought insurance would go the same way as an M3, but I'll do some research!

I'm just about quoted sub £1000 on a standard one at 20 now with 3 years no claims.

The newer shape hatch ones with the 2.5 apparently have engine problems so would go for a older saloon rather than than hatch

I seem to be saying this a lot recently, but there also seem to be a lot of threads coming up where it is the right answer.

Insurance is going to be your biggest hurdle so anything with power is going to be expensive!

You could look into a Clio 182/197 for kicks for a year or 2 until insurance is respectable. Maybe a civic type r so you can get your Vtec yo.

Putting a woman on the policy does bring it down. I guess it all depends on what you want to pay for insurance really.

A drivers car with sensible insurance, it seems the MX5 is the sensible choice. Don't be put off by the hairdresser comments, they fantastic cars!

Or thinking outside the box, kit car insurance is dirt cheap. No good for a daily driver though. I have an MK Indy, I'm 32 with all my NCD tied up on my other car. Never owned a kit car before and my insurance is under £180. Drivers cars don't come much better.

Limited mileage I insure my TVR Chim for 720 quid a year at 21/22 with an Admiral classic policy having had a couple of cars with them previously. Can't complain!

why is your insurance bad at 22? I'd had a throttle bodied Saxo VTS, MX5, Clio 172 and Megane R26 by 22, and never struggled to insure any of them comfortably under £1k?

If you.discount the engine, the S2000 is nothing special in comparison to other similar cars. And far worse than many, including the ITR.

My first car was a Triumph Spitfire, easy to work on, cheap widely available bits,, fun to drive and cheaper to insure than a hot hatch.

My next car was a Westfield, easy to work on, a blast to drive, nothing will come close and again cheaper to insure via a specialist like Adrian Flux than most other cars.

Either of the above would be a good choice, oh and yes, I did use the Westfield every day, doing 38,000 miles in it over 3 years.

Well home ownership does seem to bring insurance prices down, so not a completely mad idea.

I bought a mk3 MR2 when I was 22, a really good fun car to drive while being cheap to run.
