was this while trying to deploy a stinger?

Seen on a couple of 'police stop' programs a policeman jump out and throw one of these across the road. I always thought this was an accident waiting to happen as if the bib does it too early the car only seems to have two choices by going around, one of whcih would involve going over the policeman.

It's dangerous of course, but they are doing their job..sadly cost a guy his life.

Not the first time officers have been killed deploying stinger. This is two of my former colleagues from 2002.

Whilst I was also trained in its use I never had to deploy it in anger & it could be a PITA if you were trying to deploy it by the throw-across-the-road method as it didn't always go as you intended & could flip over. The pulling it across with the piece of rope was much easier & safer. But even so, you are in still front of a vehicle being driven towards you at speed & possibly not in full control - and may try to swerve round it - so I always considered it to be a very dangerous piece of equipment.
My sympathies to the colleagues & family of the Merseyside officer.

I'm from Wallasey, I know that bit of road well. I can see that it would be a good place to try and deploy a stop stick but cars can hit some serious speeds along that stretch so it's always going to be risky.

Very sad to see frown

Nasty job I hope they catch the offender quickly.

You're only mean to deploy stingers / stop sticks behind hard cover. A vehicle isn't hard cover. It needs to be a tree or something similar.

Thoughts to his family. The thin blue line gets thinner.

I'm not sure he was deploying the stinger. The BBC article says he was a Neighbourood officer. I don't know many Neighbourood officers who are stinger trained. Usually traffic's job.

Regardless...sad, sad news,

Stop stick by all accounts, my money is on it being a response bobby who was trained in it.

My brother (traffic) was hit when stinging a car, luckily he lived to tell the tale.

A bit from the Chief here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-merseyside-34...

Thankfully it's rare but it does make you think. I'm sure we've all taken risks, that in hindsight, were a little on the extreme side.

It's not easy when a criminal is in sight to back down.

Very sad etc. but please lets not go through the dangerous job, constantly laying their life on the line, rubbish again.

Policing is a pretty safe job, way down the list of dangerous occupations.

And you are basing your comments on what, exactly ?

A police officer is assaulted every 30 minutes in this country (these are recorded assaults on police - many minor knocks and scrapes go unrecorded).

Do you consider this "safe" ?

Have some respect - this officer was killed doing his job, you odious little man.

The data the 'most dangerous jobs' is usually from RIDDOR / HSE etc. The mass majority of policing injuries are beyond the scope of such recording methods so you actually can't a like-for-like comparisons beyond fatalities.

Would it not be safer to deploy it from the front of a parked police car. At least you have the cushion of the car if the thief tries to ram the officer. Still Dangerous either way

Ha, you must be joking. I'm guessing you missed the part where he was murdered whilst doing his job?

Perhaps your car will be stolen, would you rather the police did nothing to get it back if they had the chance to? We're lucky to have braver sorts than you looking after us, at least.
