It might not seem like a big deal for many people but yesterday I read an editorial in Ward's that said that they were excluding all Volkswagen entries in their "10 best" competition because of the emissions scandal.

Practically every OEM PR team trips over themselves to win these awards because they do provide a degree of credibility to any claims about just how good their products are.

With this move it makes the petrol engined models seem as tarnished as the diesels.

Does anybody know of other publications taking a similar position?

Industry Website, I had no idea until I did a search.
Interesting white paper section, regarding sales techniques.

What a load of self-righteous drivel in the article!

I do wonder what the long term impact this will have on VW (the whole scandal, not just the wards write up). Will it be their ultimate demise, I wonder.

It means that they have to sell cars based on style, reliability, quality and price.

Fuel economy and eco-credibility are now totally off the table as they were disingenuous at best in this regard.

But we will see soon how willing their competitors are to address this issue in advertising.

That's ridiculous. Volkswagen is just the tip of the iceberg. I know this is the Daily Fail, so a large pinch of salt required but diesel emissions is going to become an industry-wide crisis. Ford, Mazda, Mercedes and BMW have already been implicated as being up to 35% worse than VW.

VW will survive but some of the smaller manufacturers that have traditionally relied on diesel sales (I'm thinking Renault/PSA) and those overly-reliant on diesel sales (Land Rover perhaps?) are most likely to fall on hard times or meet their demise first. Even Mazda perhaps, as one of the smaller Asian manufacturers but they at least are on the cutting-edge in terms of fuel-efficient petrol engines (Skyactiv).

Actually, just read the article and it only relates to engines rather than the whole car, so fair enough. It still might be pertinent to exclude all diesels though until we know more and maybe not exclude VW petrol engines?

How does being awarded something from Wards give some kind of credibility to any claims the manufacturers make when even the majority of car geeks on Pistonheads have never even heard of Wards?

JD Powers and maybe some of the more reputable mags I can understand. It seems to offer little more than internal industry bum smacking and high fiving.
