Where to take my 968?

I've been umming and aahing about whether or not to keep my 968 and have decided to keep it and spend a bit of money getting it properly sorted. It was my daily drive for a few years, and needs a few bits doing.

Porsche Cambridge have been looking after it for a couple of years after a disappointing experience with BarrTech, but I don't want to pay OPC prices and would rather take it to a proper 968 specialist. So, who do you recommend?

The closer to Cambridge the better but willing to travel for the right combination of expertise and value!

What needs doing ?

I'm not a 968 owner, but Chris at Loe Bank Motors north of Manchester knows these cars inside out.

Last time I was there he had 6 or 7 in there, many from down south & he even looks after a couple of cars from the continent.

Bit of a trek for you but Paul Stacey at Northway Porsche used to run a 968 and he provided excellent advice when I had mine a couple of years ago.

EMC in Birmingham are excellent and know these cars inside out, I get all my major work done there and travel from Aberdeen.
A good honest service with no bullst etc, no fancy reception or coffee machine either it must be said.

True, went there to pick up an engine one of their customers was selling, they went out of their way to load the engine into my estate for me.

It had the belts done last year (by Cambridge OPC) but needs a general refresh of things like brake lines, fuel lines etc. and given the decision to keep it I'd like a specialist to give it a decent once over to see whether there's anything needs doing that hasn't been picked up in routine maintenance.

Any thoughts on RPM (Herts) or Autowerke (Norwich)?

Promax nr Bedford have done that sort of work many times I'd have thought.

Yes I would suggest Promax too, plenty of 944/968 experience, knowledge and enthusiasm there.

I bought my 3.2 carrera from Autowerke years ago, and really liked their outfit. The car was exactly as described and the owner seemed a really honest guy who I would be happy to return to. It was 9 years ago though (where did that go?!!?)

Another vote for EMC for any front engined Porsche. I wouldn't go anywhere else now, but appreciate it's personal preference.

Ninex in Maidenhead started in life as 968 enthusiasts, and Jon Mitchell in Bournemouth is also worth talking to if you're on the South Coast.

My 944 is looked after by Auto Umbau Porsche at Silsoe, just south of Bedford. They are a 911 specialist but they really do know their stuff. It'd probably be worth giving them a ring though as they are normally very busy.

Promax just outside Milton Keynes have looked after my 944 Turbo for the last five years and always done a excellent job.

I took my 968 to them when I got it to have the once over, Tony (workshop manager) invited me down for a cup of tea and a wander around it on the ramp after hours to put a rectification/maintenace programme together to decide what they needed to do now, what I could do myself and what should be looked at over the coming year to keep on-top.

I forgot to add that the owner has had 7 968s, you can see his last one in one of the scrolling header pictures (the yellow 'Silverstone' Car)

Nice one! he bought it as a Station car to replace his Vanquish, but he felt guilty using it like that, so swpped it for the green Elan that's now also up for sale on their website....along with his stunning 993 RS CS...for £425k!!

You're not far from PRS. Paul's relocated to Brent Pelham and has re-hired one of his old team. I'm told he knows what he's doing and may well go and see for myself in the spring.

Won't sell you anything you don't need. Live and breath front engine Porsche, have successfully run 968's in 2 britcar 24hr races and also taken the PCGB championship in a 968.
