A search suggests Texecom / Honeywell are the best regarded alarms systems but they can be awkward to set up.

I just want a simple system with four PIRs that must be reliable and be able to send a text when triggered.

I intend to simply alarm the: Lounge, Office, Garage and Bedroom 1 - if anyone breaks in they will go to at least one of these. I have dogs downstairs so don't envisage setting it at night.

I have additional garaging 200m from the house - I assume it's easier to alarm this separately as I'd like it constantly set (they are used for storage)

Have I missed anything ?

Which one do I need ?

How reliable is a PIR in the garage? Would a heavy-duty door contact sensor be better?

I cant help with a model but ive fitted several honeywell wired alarms and they have been faultless apart from regular battery changes. Im not sure they do systems that sms though, i do know they do speech diallers.
My dad wants a wireless alarm fitted in his house and the Texecom range has been recommended to me.

Fitted two Honeywell G4 alarms & not had any problems, easy to wire & easy to program. Not sure on SMS though, I know I've got a speech dialer but in any case if Honeywell don't do one then I'm sure the panel can be connected to a 3rd party one. Give these people a shout :-

As for PR in garage, again, no problems here. I've fitted a 360 degree one :-

Funnily enough the alarm went off last night @ 1am so would have said steer clear, however upon checking the PIR that caused it this morning a spider had decided to make its home inside so that explains it!

It doesn't have to be a text message I just need it to notify me - the neighbours are unlikely to hear the siren.

It seems there are different types of PIR - some with multiple sensors to minimise false alarms but yes I guess a couple of door contacts would also do the job (but I've already run the wiring to the top corner for a PIR)

The Texecom stuff is good - it's a bit fiddly to set up but we are only talking half an hour here.

I've got it on the house and garage (50m away) with door opening sensors (2per door), impact sensors on the two doors and in the roof and a PIR plus extra sirens and a "master blaster".

Whole lot is controlled by a Visonic fob so no entry delay (play with the door and it goes off instantly). It's good stuff and exceptionally reliable - it's gone off falsely once in 18 months (when I was away - OH called the police and two cars were there in 5 minutes).

I had all my motorbikes nicked 18 months ago: it's not happening again!
