Spain car hire licence reqmts
Discussion
I'm going to Spain for a week on hols. I've heard something about a code that may be required, now that the paper part of the licence is no longer issued. I have an old green paper one (yes, I am that old) with no photocard. I've never had a problem in the past, just show PP and green licence, sign, keys, done. Do I now need to contact DVLA and get a code that I can give to the hire shop?

Yes. No need to contact DVLA - it can all be done on-line.Now I've said that despite the warnings, no-one I've come across in the UK or Ireland (Hertz) actually cares. But you just never know.

Old style licence = no change.
Nope. all change.https://insidedvla.blog.gov.uk/2015/03/24/advice-f...
Points are no longer recorded on paper.
If the hire company is aware and insisting on it he'll either need the printout or the code.
I hired a car in Majorca and they didn't even want to see the photocard.
I then tried to point out existing damage to the car (just a couple of dings) and they said something along the lines of "forget about it, you should see them all at the end of the season". They also said that if parking in a busy town to expect the car to get a few knocks but not to bother informing them unless it was badly damaged.
On return they told me to park it up and lock the keys in the boot and they would find it later.

It's similar in Italy. Come the end of the year the cars are resprayed and it all starts again Never been asked for a code (or paper counterpart) abroad, European car hire companies are fine with just the photocard. Due to my job, I have probably hired cars in the majority of EU countries and certainly multiple times in the last decade. Spain will be absolutely fine I assure you.

As the code has only been introduced in the last three months or so, most of your experience isn't relevant. I haven't hired since this came in and though I can well imagine that most hire companies outside of the UK won't care, what if one does?
Probably best to take the code, just in case. Another great DVLA triumph..........
I doubt that any country in the world will be aware of a DVLA code, I suspect the only issue would be hiring a vehicle in the UK.
I use my NZ licence to hire a car in the UK (although I have a UK licence), no one ever asks about points - (it doesn't have any at present). And what would anyone in the UK make of a licence with 75 points on anyway (the limit is 100 here)?
