I'm going to Spain for a week on hols. I've heard something about a code that may be required, now that the paper part of the licence is no longer issued. I have an old green paper one (yes, I am that old) with no photocard. I've never had a problem in the past, just show PP and green licence, sign, keys, done. Do I now need to contact DVLA and get a code that I can give to the hire shop?

Yes. No need to contact DVLA - it can all be done on-line.

Now I've said that despite the warnings, no-one I've come across in the UK or Ireland (Hertz) actually cares. But you just never know.

Nope. all change.

Points are no longer recorded on paper.

If the hire company is aware and insisting on it he'll either need the printout or the code.

I hired a car from Sixt in Bilbao two weeks ago. They just looked at the photo card part. Didn't want the obsolete paper bit or the new DVLA online code.

Only UK based hire car centres care. When you're abroad, all they'll want it your photocard.

I hired a car in Spain a couple of weeks ago and they only took my licence details, I offered the code for them to check for any endorsements but they weren't bothered.

I hired in Netherlands recently and they didn't ask for the code, but I had it with me just in case.

For all the effort it is to get the code it would be prudent to get it in case you were asked for it.

I hired a car in Majorca and they didn't even want to see the photocard.

I then tried to point out existing damage to the car (just a couple of dings) and they said something along the lines of "forget about it, you should see them all at the end of the season". They also said that if parking in a busy town to expect the car to get a few knocks but not to bother informing them unless it was badly damaged.

On return they told me to park it up and lock the keys in the boot and they would find it later.

Thanks - I still have a paper licence and I hadn't heard that before.

It looks like car hire companies in Europe are happy with the photocard. I took the DVLA code to Germany last month, but Europcar didn't ask for it. The problem will be when a car hire company does demand the code and you haven't got it

Add Enterprise at Turin airport to the list of rental companies who don't ask for the code.

Thrifty/Hertz in Menorca 3 weeks ago only wanted the photocard.

We moved shortly after the paper copy change, so went armed with one of the codes.

EDIT: Only time that I've been asked for the paper copy has been in the UK.

It's similar in Italy. Come the end of the year the cars are resprayed and it all starts again wink

Never been asked for a code (or paper counterpart) abroad, European car hire companies are fine with just the photocard. Due to my job, I have probably hired cars in the majority of EU countries and certainly multiple times in the last decade. Spain will be absolutely fine I assure you.

As the code has only been introduced in the last three months or so, most of your experience isn't relevant.

I haven't hired since this came in and though I can well imagine that most hire companies outside of the UK won't care, what if one does?

Probably best to take the code, just in case. Another great DVLA triumph..........

I doubt that any country in the world will be aware of a DVLA code, I suspect the only issue would be hiring a vehicle in the UK.

I use my NZ licence to hire a car in the UK (although I have a UK licence), no one ever asks about points - (it doesn't have any at present). And what would anyone in the UK make of a licence with 75 points on anyway (the limit is 100 here)?
