Hi I fancy a smaller camera to supplement my canon dslr

I have tried a friends g16 and it feels nicely built. Any alternates that I should be considering. Handling and image quality is what counts for me.

So many options I am confused.

Please help.

G7x has a larger sensor I think and is probably better, if you want the g16 body etc then perhaps the G1x mk2 which has an aps-c slr sized sensor, or the EOS M series which has interchangable lenses.

Sony HX50
I bought one of these just prior to my brothers wedding as we needed a compact quickly. Was in a hovel of a town and the best bet was Argos, turns out the do it cheaper than any online retailers.

Astounded by the features, most impressively the optical zoom and the wifi connectivity to your smart phone.
Great piece of kit.

When my Canon S100 broke a couple of years ago I took it back to John Lewis for repair (was just within their two year warranty) and they lent me a Sony HX50 which I found to be a little bit bigger in terms of footprint though the zoom was fantastic along with the battery life which was far superior, unfortunately I didn't think the image quality was as good. After several weeks of waiting around JW informed me that the S100 wasn't going to be repaired under warranty due to issues with Canon and offered me my money back which I took, then purchased a Sony RX100 which was fractionally bigger than the Canon, but far superior in terms of build quality and image quality.

I've found the RX100 MK1 to be an extremely competent camera in all respects apart from photographing my kids indoors or in low light conditions when the shutter speed drops down to say 1/30 which is too slow for fast moving kids! The battery life is extremely good compared to the Canon S100 and the build quality is very good. The menu options are a little bit clumsy compared to the Canon but that's Sony for you.

Since my purchase Sony have unleashed the RX100 MK2, MK3 and MK4 so caters for all budgets. It can be used in full auto, or A or S priority or for that matter full manual including focusing, is a very nice bit of kit.

Alternatively you could go for a Canon EOS 100D which offers higher image quality and is a lighter but fully featured DSLR and not that much bigger than a G16. Many of the more competent photographers on here are using the 100D in preference to some of the larger and more expensive DSLRs they own, and the 100D is one of the cameras which I've been considering for some time ahead of Christmas. Is rumoured that a newer version is due to be released soon so I'm watching for the price dropping ahead of its release.
